Alternativa Film Festival 2027: Free Africa–Asia–Latin America Film Call, $120,000 Fund
On October 29, 2026, Alternativa Film Festival opened submissions for its fourth edition, planned in Africa in late 2027. The festival seeks socially impactful fiction, documentaries, animation and hybrid cinema. There is no submission fee; the application period runs through March 1, 2027. The exact host country, city and festival dates have not yet been announced.
Eligibility and qualifying work
Regional eligibility is crucial. Feature films running 40 minutes or longer are welcomed from eligible countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Short-film applications, described as up to 40 minutes, are restricted to filmmakers in Africa, the 2027 focus region. Do not read this as a worldwide short-film call: filmmakers from Asia and Latin America should check whether their project meets feature eligibility. Films must have been completed after January 1, 2026, and should be able to demonstrate a meaningful social theme or intended impact.
Application and deadline
Seven awards share a total prize fund of US$120,000; the Focus feature award and both Shorts awards are reserved for African filmmakers. Organisers state that directors of films selected for the competition will receive covered travel and accommodation to attend the festival. The programme also includes public screenings, discussions and free Industry Days. An opportunity for later distribution may arise through Alternativa Distribution but is not guaranteed. Carefully review the eligible-country list and final 2027 rules.
Costs, awards and important cautions
