A Bronx-only individual artist grant—not a New York-wide competition

Bronx Council on the Arts (BCA) is inviting applications for its New Work (NW) funding stream under the 2027 Community Engagement Grants. The deadline is Friday 30 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m. New York local time. The grant supports **individual artists based in the Bronx** who are creating new work and involving members of the community through a public event or the development process. Visual art, photography, digital media and other artistic disciplines may qualify when the proposed activity meets the published community requirements.

Someone who lives or works solely in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn or outside New York City should not assume this Bronx-specific fund is available to them. There are distinct programmes for artists and organisations in other boroughs, but each has its own administrator, requirements and timelines. A proposal must be rooted in the Bronx community, not just feature an image of the borough.

Why New Work differs from Arts Fund and Community Arts

Bronx Council on the Arts groups several grants under its Community Engagement Grants umbrella. New Work specifically supports individual Bronx artists making a **new** work with a public-facing or participatory component. The separate Arts Fund stream also supports collectives and small arts organisations, whereas Community Arts may require an individual artist or collective to work through a qualifying local fiscal sponsor or community nonprofit.

Applicants should choose the stream or permitted combination carefully. An individual proposing an original digital installation and a free community discussion may fit New Work; an incorporated cultural organisation operating a season of events may fit a different fund. The ability to combine requests and any total award ceilings are controlled by the common 2027 guidelines and should not be inferred from unrelated grants.

Public connection is part of the creative brief

New Work requires an engagement of a segment of the Bronx community through a publicly accessible activity—such as an exhibition, presentation or performance—or through a creative process that meaningfully involves community participants. Examples might include community-led photography, a participatory video or a site-responsive graphic installation. These are illustrative possibilities, not confirmed commissions that the Council is ordering.

Applicants should describe who will participate, what changes because of the activity, the relationship with the location or partner, whether access is affordable or free, and how any images of participants will be used. Especially for documentary and digital work, obtain permission for portraits, music and other rights-bearing material. A fully private studio project with no community component may not meet the programme goal.

Grant size and budgeting: check the 2027 guidance

The New Work award is competitive and the Council's main public description does not guarantee a standard payment to any eligible artist. Public 2027 grant listings indicate New Work grants may reach up to US$5,000, but the exact request rules and combined-stream restrictions should be taken from BCA's downloadable **2027 Community Engagement Grants guidelines** rather than a third-party financial estimate.

Build a feasible creative budget for artists' labour, materials, venue or equipment access, exhibition delivery, community collaboration and documentation. Distinguish expenses for your own work from costs that a partner organisation will cover. Successful applications may need to report on activities and budgets after completing the project.

Who runs it and where to apply

Bronx Council on the Arts is a borough-level cultural organisation advocating for equity and local artists. It publishes previous New Work grantees, current guidance in English and Spanish, application links and an office address at 2700 East Tremont Avenue, Bronx, NY. New Work is supported by the New York State Council on the Arts decentralisation programme, providing an identifiable public funding and accountability structure.
