Canberra City of Design Smaller Projects Fund: Up to A$5,000 for Local Design Projects
Overview and organiser
artsACT is the Australian Capital Territory Government body responsible for arts policy, funding advice and development initiatives. Its City of Design Project Fund supports Canberra’s proposed bid to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network as a City of Design. The current Smaller Projects stream offers grants of up to A$5,000 for focused activities that contribute to the 2026 Craft + Design Canberra Festival or otherwise make a strong contribution to Canberra’s identity and ambition as a global design city.
Country-limited eligibility
This is a place-based Australian opportunity, not an international design competition. The official page states that funding is for artists, designers, arts and cultural organisations and creative businesses based in Canberra. Applicants should use the detailed guidelines to confirm the required ACT connection, legal or business arrangements, insurance and any other conditions that apply to their applicant type. Being interested in Canberra or proposing an online activity for Canberra does not by itself establish eligibility.
Suitable design activity
The Smaller Projects stream is intended for modest projects that contribute to the Festival program or clearly advance Canberra as a global city of design. The wider initiative highlights design excellence, local talent, innovation, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander design, participation and cultural exchange. A digital or media-art proposal may be relevant where design is central—for example an interactive design presentation, digitally mediated exhibition, public-facing design workshop, creative-technology demonstration or documented design research—but applicants should not assume that the use of software alone makes a project eligible.
Funding and deadline
Smaller Projects may request up to A$5,000. Applications are currently open and close on 1 April 2027, with outcomes normally notified within six weeks of submission. The separate Major Projects stream, which offered A$5,000 to A$50,000, closed on 3 December 2025 and should not be confused with this open stream. Approximately A$100,000 is indicated for Smaller Projects across the fund period, subject to demand and successful applications.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted through the official artsACT grants portal. Applicants should first read the City of Design Project Fund Guidelines, then explain the project’s design quality, Canberra connection, intended participants or audience, timeline, budget and practical delivery plan. If the project is outside the core Festival dates, the case for how it advances the fund’s design aims should be especially clear. artsACT provides a telephone number and email address for guideline and accessibility questions.
