Charlottetown Traffic Control Cabinet Art 2026: PEI Artists Can Win a C$1,500 Public-Art Commission
The City of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, is commissioning four local artists to bring original artwork into public space by wrapping traffic control cabinets at intersections across the city. Each selected artist will receive C$1,500, plus HST if applicable. The deadline is Monday 16 November 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Atlantic local time.
Who is eligible? Practicing artists and creators who reside in Charlottetown or elsewhere on Epekwitk/Prince Edward Island. This is a locally restricted opportunity, not a worldwide open call. Graphic illustrators, image-makers and artists whose work can be translated into an effective printed design may find the project particularly relevant; applicants should review the official medium and reproduction requirements.
What will be produced? Four commissioned artworks will be printed as vinyl wraps and installed on traffic-signal control cabinets. The installed works may remain in place for up to five years. There is no prescribed theme, but designs should read effectively for people moving through streets and intersections.
The commission is distinct from the initial application. Applicants submit examples of past work; finalists then collaborate with a City project team to produce or adapt an original design. The City pays printing and installation costs and provides technical guidance on cabinet dimensions and production files.
How to apply: complete the linked online application form with contact details, an artist statement of no more than 250 words, a list of submitted works and no more than five high-resolution images of previous art. Accepted image formats include JPEG, PNG, GIF and PDF. Do not send concept sketches prepared specifically for the cabinet as the portfolio: the organiser says past work is what the jury assesses at this stage.
Selection and schedule: an independent arts/community panel assesses portfolio quality, technical transferability and the artwork's relevance to public space. The City expects to notify artists in December 2026, complete final designs by March 12 2027 and install the artwork in summer 2027.
About the organiser: Charlottetown's municipal arts programme uses public-art commissions to bring visual work into shared city streetscapes. The City's own call explains selection criteria, intellectual-property arrangements and commission terms. Artists retain copyright in their submitted portfolio work; read the eventual commissioning agreement separately.
