Cincinnati Art Museum Seeks Local Interactive Installation Artist in Residence for 2027
Local 2027 artist residency
Cincinnati Art Museum is seeking an artist or artist team for its 2027 Rosenthal Education Center Artist in Residence programme. The selected creative will design and build an interactive installation for the museum's family learning space, on view May 22–November 7, 2027. Eligible applicants must be at least 18 and currently reside in the Greater Cincinnati/Tri-State area, including Dayton, Cincinnati or Northern Kentucky. This is not an international open call.
Interactive design requirements
The project must draw inspiration from one to five artworks in the museum's collection, offer interactive activities appropriate for children aged 3–12, support visitors of different mobility levels and withstand six months of public hands-on use. The approximate project space is 350 square feet, including a substantial mural wall. The call does not require the installation to use digital technologies specifically; it is an interactive-art and exhibition-design commission.
Budget and artist commitments
The museum identifies a total US$2,700 artist payment, broken down as a US$1,500 honorarium plus US$1,200 for artist drop-in activities. There is a separate US$5,000 allowance for design, fabrication, engineering and installation. The chosen artist must participate in public engagement sessions and address maintenance needs while the work is on view. These budget allocations are not a single unrestricted prize payment.
Deadline and required proposal
Submissions are due Monday, November 2, 2026, by 5 p.m. Eastern Time. Applicants are asked for a cover letter, résumé of up to two pages, a proposal with drawings, designs and timeline, three professional references, up to ten images of past work, and an annotated image list. The museum accepts electronic files or a shareable cloud-folder link sent by email; no paper submissions.
Selection and public presentation
Museum staff review the proposals for originality, connections with the collection, accessibility, durability and ability to engage visitors. The selected artist is expected to be notified November 20, 2026. A signed agreement is required, and planned public display runs through November 2027. The official call provides full contract conditions and contacts.
