Portland's 2027 IFCC artist grant and residency call is open

Friends of the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center (Friends of IFCC) has opened applications for its 2027 Artist Grant & Residency Program. The official deadline is Friday, October 16, 2026 at 11:59pm Pacific Time. The opportunity is intended for Portland-based artists working at any career stage, including visual art, multimedia, writing, music, spoken word and interdisciplinary performance. This is a local Portland programme rather than a worldwide call for anyone who can travel to the United States.

For creative practitioners whose work combines moving images, electronic media, interactive installation, projection or experimental digital art, the programme is worth exploring because its eligibility explicitly includes multimedia. That does not make every commercial technology project automatically eligible: the proposed work must be an artistic practice compatible with IFCC's community-centred aims and with the organiser's full guidelines.

Two different opportunities: project grants or residencies

Applicants choose one of two routes: Project Grants or Residencies. The programme says award amounts for both types typically range from US$5,000 to US$8,000. The money is described by Friends of IFCC as unrestricted support for artistic practice, meaning that a polished finished artwork is not itself an automatic condition of the grant. However, participants do have public engagement duties, so it is not simply funding with no programme involvement.

A project grant supports the artist's work without necessarily offering a dedicated residency workspace. The residency track combines the artist award with shared workspace and performance space at IFCC, helping creators develop work in dialogue with other participants. Applicants should read the organiser's current guidance to determine which track best matches the activity, schedule, technical needs and available space.

Residencies run for four to nine weeks in 2027

For 2027, the organisers plan five residency periods, each lasting four to nine weeks, with up to four artists sharing space in each period. The schedule is agreed among participants. The programme explains that only the building's first floor will be used for programming because the elevator is out of service; this is intended to keep activities accessible within the spaces available. Applicants proposing digital projection, sensors, screens, computer-based installation or other equipment should verify the actual facilities, power needs and restrictions before assuming that any technical configuration can be accommodated.

A public event at IFCC is required

Every selected artist must activate the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center through at least one public event. Friends of IFCC gives examples such as a workshop, open studio, artist talk, class, performance or exhibition. This requirement applies to the larger purpose of the programme: reviving IFCC as a creative and cultural home for North and Northeast Portland, highlighting local artists and bringing audiences into the space. An artistic film, multimedia installation or participatory visual work may suit an event format if it is practical and accessible to the community.

Participation also includes opportunities for collaboration and at least two gatherings intended to strengthen relationships among artists. Optional professional-development workshops and a winter artists' showcase may be offered. Therefore, applicants should think beyond the immediate financial award and consider whether they can contribute meaningfully to the centre's programme and local audience.

Who is eligible — and who should not assume eligibility?

The official call welcomes Portland-based artists working in a broad range of disciplines and at any professional stage. Artists who currently live or develop their practice elsewhere should not assume that an artistic project merely taking place in Portland meets the geographical requirements. The application form and linked programme guidelines should be consulted for the precise definition of being Portland-based and any documentation of local ties that the organiser requires.

The programme is for practicing artists, not an automatic source of funding for all businesses using visual software. Digital designers, audiovisual creators and mixed-media practitioners should explain their work as an artistic practice, present representative work samples and describe how their proposed event will connect with IFCC. This advice is especially relevant to artists who make both commercial client work and independent visual or experimental work.

How much funding is available? Clarifying the different amounts

Friends of IFCC currently describes a typical award of US$5,000–US$8,000 for its two artist tracks. Separately, Portland's Office of Arts & Culture lists a US$5,000 City-supported grant award amount for this partner programme. Those figures refer to different descriptions of the programme's funding structure: private and other partner support may contribute to awards beyond the City-funded portion. Applicants should rely on the specific Friends of IFCC guidelines and offer terms rather than assuming that any published amount is guaranteed.

The Portland Small Grants Program also has a cross-programme funding condition: artists may apply to more than one City partner, but combined General Fund-supported awards across Friends of IFCC, MusicOregon and RACC are subject to the City's US$5,000 cap for the 2026–27 fiscal year. That city-funding limit should not be confused with the amount Friends of IFCC may list for its entire award package. Artists seeking more than one local grant should review the rules carefully and disclose overlapping funding as required.

How to prepare a compelling application

Before opening the form, select the Project Grant or Residency pathway that genuinely fits your work. Assemble an accurate artist biography, recent work samples and a clear account of the artistic methods used. For multimedia practice, be specific about what audiences will actually encounter: a screen-based film, spatial sound, projection, interactive visual media or another exhibition format. Include an achievable public-event concept that relates to the cultural role of IFCC and the communities served by the centre.

A convincing proposal should connect three elements: the development of the artist's own practice, the resources offered by the programme, and the public's experience at the required IFCC event. Be precise about what equipment or space is essential, particularly when applying to share residency facilities. These are editorial preparation suggestions, not substitute submission instructions; the downloadable official programme guidelines and current form set the real requirements.

Deadline: 16 October 2026, 11:59pm Pacific

The official Friends of IFCC application page states that the closing time is 11:59pm Pacific Time on Friday, October 16, 2026. The organisers' 2027 page provides the application form and downloadable guidelines. Decisions are scheduled for December 15, 2026 according to the City of Portland's published programme timeline, with funded activities taking place across 2027. Because October's local Pacific time is daylight saving time, applicants in other regions should double-check the conversion rather than rely on their device's default time zone.
