Studio 170 Germany 2027: Up to $1,500 travel support for New England visual and digital artists
Travel assistance for artists with a real German invitation
Studio 170 | Germany is the Goethe-Institut Boston's travel support programme for creative professionals based in New England who plan to take part in a residency or collaborative artistic project in Germany in 2027. Eligible disciplines include visual art, multimedia and experimental practice as well as music, film, writing, theatre and dance. The support is not an open call for speculative tourist trips or a residency placement that the institute itself arranges. The central prerequisite is a confirmed invitation from an artistic partner, residency or institution in Germany.
Who qualifies, and who should not apply?
Applicants must be based in New England in the United States. The official description covers New England artists across artistic disciplines who are living and/or working in that region; a credible and confirmed German collaborator or host is essential. The programme expects a substantial stay, generally at least ten days, though no absolute minimum residency duration is imposed in its public description. Being a foreign applicant merely able to fly to Germany is insufficient, so this is a country-restricted opportunity for eligible US-region applicants and not a worldwide grant.
Up to $1,500 reimbursed after expenses
Successful applicants may claim reimbursement of up to $1,500 in relevant travel costs. Eligible cost examples include flights, accommodation, meals, visa expenses and necessary shipping of art materials. Costs that the German host is already covering cannot be reimbursed again. Original receipts are required, so artists should plan cash flow instead of assuming an advance stipend will appear before travel. The support is capped and will not necessarily pay for the complete international trip, production of a new digital artwork or installation expenses at the partner site.
How to prepare a successful proposal
The key materials are a motivation letter with a clear project description, the confirmed invitation from a collaborator or institution in Germany, a relevant artistic CV and a budget showing travel expenses plus other financial contributions. For artists producing installation, moving image or interactive media, the proposal should describe exactly what will be made together, who hosts the project and what is provided locally. Awardees must share material with Goethe-Institut Boston's public communication channels during the stay and then contribute to a public event in Boston or submit a final report.
Deadline and independent track
The official Goethe-Institut Boston call says that 2027 projects in Germany are open for applications until 22 November 2026. This is a different programme from Studio 170 | Residency, a two-week creative-space call taking place in Boston in 2027. Applicants should follow the specific online application link for the GERMANY travel scheme, confirm the current time zone, and check which files and proofs are mandatory before submission. An invitation alone does not mean the grant has been awarded.
About the organiser
The Goethe-Institut Boston supports cultural dialogue between Germany and the New England states. Studio 170 was established as a channel for artists to exchange ideas and develop transatlantic relationships. Its current public website lists previously supported Germany journeys and collaborations, including the work of visual artist and Boston University lecturer Gohar Dashti. These examples provide historical background, not a promise of funding for future applicants.
