Supporting museums preserving African American cultural achievements

The Institute of Museum and Library Services is accepting FY2027 applications for Museum Grants for African American History and Culture. The fund is intended to build the capacity of museums and related educational institutions that serve communities through African American cultural heritage, history and the achievements of African Americans. It is relevant to museums preserving African American photography, textiles, design, folk art, painting, sculpture, archives and other visual records when a qualifying institution has a project that increases access, stewardship or professional capacity. The programme is an institutional grant, not a personal art prize or a grant awarded to everyone with a particular racial identity.

Eligible institutions and the role of HBCUs

IMLS identifies African American museums, museum service organisations directly supporting African American museums and historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) among the principal audiences for this programme. The FY2027 Notice of Funding Opportunity establishes the formal organisational eligibility requirements, which must be met by the legal lead applicant. A public cultural centre without the required museum or institutional connection should not assume automatic eligibility. Nor is the grant an unrestricted worldwide call for commercial galleries. A museum's application should show a real connection to the communities, material and collections it serves and its capacity to meet federal compliance rules.

Preservation, exhibitions, professional development and digital access

Potential projects may improve management and interpretation of visual archives, increase online discovery of community photo collections, preserve culturally significant artworks or develop exhibition resources for students and public visitors. IMLS specifically seeks stronger museum staffing and workforce development, institutional resilience, and access to museum and archival collections. A digital-heritage project should explain ownership and permission for images, ethical treatment of material, accessible metadata and a plan for community involvement. Those elements strengthen the institution's mission; they do not imply that equipment, commercial reproductions or all travel expenses are automatically reimbursable.

Two different cost-share thresholds

FY2027 awards may range from US$5,000 to US$500,000 for work lasting one to three years. For requests between US$5,000 and US$100,000, IMLS states that no nonfederal cost share is required. For requests between US$100,001 and US$500,000, the institution must supply a nonfederal contribution at least equal to the amount requested from IMLS. These are material differences that should be considered when determining a project's scope and funding plan. The deadline is November 13, 2026; applicants must use the official federal application and current year forms.

Organiser history and safety

IMLS is a federal funding agency with public grant records and official applicant support for museums across the United States. The African American History and Culture grant line identifies programme officers and points applicants to Grants.gov for the current opportunity. The programme's mission is stated openly and is distinct from the separate American Latino History and Culture or Native American/Native Hawaiian museum programmes. Before submitting budgets, protected collection materials or museum financial documents, verify the current federal eligibility, matching rules, permissions and application deadline through the official agency website.
