Museums for America FY2027: $5,000–$350,000 for U.S. Art Exhibitions, Collections and Digital Access
The FY2027 Museums for America funding programme
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is accepting applications to Museums for America, a federal funding programme for eligible U.S. museums of different sizes and disciplines. For an art museum, public gallery with museum operations, photography museum or museum collecting digital and media art, the programme may support an original project that benefits visitors, collections and professional practice. Examples include better public exhibitions, digitising significant collections to improve access, community partnerships and educational programmes linked to original works. This is project funding for an eligible museum, not a $350,000 personal artist commission or unrestricted international art competition.
What a qualifying American museum must show
Museums for America uses IMLS's institutional eligibility rules. Applicants generally need to be museum organisations operating in the United States or eligible associated territories, have a mission to collect, preserve, interpret and display material for the public, appropriate staff and an established relationship with their audiences. Some public and nonprofit governing bodies may apply on behalf of a museum under the federal definitions. A private design studio, individual artist or foreign exhibition space without eligible American museum status cannot access this grant merely because an artwork will appear on a website. Before assuming an artist-run gallery is a qualifying museum, read the detailed FY2027 Notice of Funding Opportunity.
Collections and exhibition projects rather than ordinary operations
The federal programme supports three broad goals: meaningful learning and public discovery, engaged community partnerships, and responsible museum-collections stewardship. A suitable visual-art project could improve a photography collection's cataloguing and public access, establish a museum education programme around a new exhibition, or care for historically significant paintings or media-art works. The museum should explain visitor needs, accessibility, the public benefit, work plan, participating staff, evaluation and preservation responsibilities. Funding for routine operations unrelated to the project, stand-alone commercial software and projects not complying with federal policy should not be assumed to qualify.
Grant range, cash or in-kind matching and closing date
IMLS currently lists FY2027 awards from US$5,000 to US$350,000 for one-to-three-year projects. Applicants must provide nonfederal cost sharing equal to or greater than the amount of the IMLS request, following the detailed definitions of qualifying cash and allowable in-kind contributions in the official notice. The deadline is November 13, 2026. Organisations should register with both Grants.gov and the required federal applicant systems sufficiently early, and carefully reconcile the IMLS budget with their documented matching contribution. No museum is guaranteed the maximum award, and grant availability remains subject to federal appropriations and IMLS discretion.
Federal organiser, examples and safe verification
IMLS is the United States federal agency supporting museums and libraries and has documented awards for museum exhibitions, conservation, education and public heritage access. Its September 2026 announcement invites eligible institutions in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and qualifying U.S. territories to apply. The official application page links the FY2027 funding notice and application portal. Before supplying institutional financial records or work samples, verify the museum definition, cost share, deadline, current federal compliance rules, and Grants.gov opportunity ID directly with IMLS.
