Six-month arts research residency in Waterloo Region

The City of Kitchener in Ontario, Canada, is accepting proposals for its 2027 Artist in Residence programme. The six-month, part-time project combines community arts engagement, visual research, storytelling, neighbourhood identity and wayfinding in the Lancaster West Park Network. The artist is expected to facilitate activities with residents and produce a documented set of findings that may combine visual imagery, design, digital records and written research. A later public-art commission is a separate future opportunity.

Eligibility: Canadian status and a local connection

Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents and live or work in Waterloo Region, or show a clear and continuing connection or affiliation with the region. The call seeks an artist able to facilitate multidisciplinary activities and turn community input into a creative research or documentation outcome. Work across visual arts, writing and archival research is welcomed.

Honorarium and resources

The selected artist will receive a C$10,000 honorarium in two instalments for the part-time six-month residency. In addition, a budget of up to C$2,500 is available for pre-approved out-of-pocket project expenses, including materials and collaborators. The organiser also offers staff guidance, community connections and access to certain facilities subject to availability. The official statement does not present this as a full-time salaried job.

Required proposal materials

The application package includes a maximum three-page CV or biography, a letter of intent of up to 500 words, three to four work examples, a community-engagement plan of up to 250 words, a proposed budget and schedule, and a reference letter about facilitating community engagement. The online form has a 25 MB limit per attachment. The city's call explains alternative email and postal submission routes.

Deadline and programme timeline

Applications close at 5 p.m. Kitchener local time on Thursday, 3 December 2026. The anticipated selection is in early 2027, with the residency starting around April 2027 and concluding in late September or October. The organiser notes that the project timeline may change.

About the organiser
