Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) is accepting applications to Creative Learning for the 2027 Manhattan Arts Grants cycle. The scheme supports artist-led, hands-on learning in all artistic disciplines for older adults, including appropriately designed digital and interactive art courses. The official 2027 application window closes on Thursday 12 November 2026 at 6:00pm Eastern Standard Time. Awards range from $1,000 to $17,500. This is funding for community arts education, not a standalone prize for the best digital artwork or a general software-development grant.

Who can apply in Manhattan?

The 2027 Manhattan Arts Grants cycle welcomes eligible Manhattan-based individual artists, artist collectives and nonprofit arts organisations. Creative Learning projects must principally benefit older adults in Manhattan community districts 1 through 12, and meet the programme's rules on applicants, project budgeting and access. Organisations located outside the borough or seeking funds for a project wholly directed at a different city cannot assume eligibility. LMCC uses an initial online eligibility questionnaire to clarify applicant status and funding-source restrictions.

Sequential creative learning, not a one-off demonstration

Creative Learning requires the same group of older adults to take part in at least three learning sessions with a teaching artist. The sessions should build skills over time and enable participants to experiment and create artworks themselves. Examples may include an introductory series in creative coding, interactive image-making, generative visual composition, digital drawing or participatory new-media art. The suitability of the chosen software, equipment, accessibility arrangements and arts-education methods must be demonstrated through a lesson plan and realistic schedule.

An artist's own digital exhibition without sequential teaching is not the central purpose of this programme. Creative Learning does not fund general youth art programmes or intergenerational projects under its older-adult criterion. A purely self-paced online tutorial or an app that people use independently without live teaching is also ineligible. Where a remote format is proposed for accessibility reasons, the programme requires real-time participation and an identifiable Manhattan older-adult audience, with the online activities discussed with LMCC.

Awards and funded project costs

The 2027 grant range is $1,000–$17,500, depending on the approved project and grant source. LMCC accepts project costs directly tied to the arts-learning programme: teaching artist fees, qualified support staff, studio or accessible venue hire, appropriate art materials and equipment rental, and promotion directed towards eligible older participants. Its guidelines require a fee for all participating teaching artists, including the applicant when they teach. The grant does not simply subsidise the full year-round operating budget of a digital art company.

Manhattan activity in the 2027 calendar year

The planned sequential learning programme and any appropriate public culminating activity must take place during calendar year 2027. Sessions can be held in community centres, libraries, older-adult centres or other accessible neighbourhood spaces. Venues can be tentative at application time, but a change later must remain within the eligible Manhattan area. If a larger programme runs across multiple boroughs, LMCC can consider only the supported Manhattan sessions and their related expenses.

Application, key dates and other LMCC programmes

Applications opened on 8 September 2026 and close at 6pm EST on 12 November. Results are scheduled for 5 April 2027. The project submission uses the LMCC Submittable form and asks for a clear learning plan, evidence of creative experience, target participants and an itemised budget entered in the form. An applicant cannot submit Creative Learning and Creative Engagement or UMEZ Arts Engagement projects as separate programme-based proposals in the same cycle; the rules limit each applicant to one project-funding track.
