Massachusetts Cultural Facilities FY27: $35,000 Feasibility Grants for Galleries and Art Centers
Plan a cultural space before investing in construction
Mass Cultural Council and its partner MassDevelopment are accepting FY27 Cultural Facilities Fund requests, including Feasibility & Technical Assistance Grants. This grant category offers up to $35,000 for eligible Massachusetts cultural organisations to research, design and test the feasibility of improvements to art spaces, galleries, museums and creative centres. It can help answer practical questions before a cultural organisation makes a costly construction commitment. For a visual arts nonprofit planning a new exhibition venue or a media-art organisation evaluating its shared projection space, the fund may support the necessary professional analysis. It is NOT a capital construction grant and does not fund an individual's independent artwork or private architectural practice.
A cultural nonprofit, municipality or qualifying college applies
Applications are generally intended for Massachusetts 501(c)(3) cultural organisations primarily concerned with arts, humanities or interpretive science, plus certain eligible municipalities or colleges operating publicly accessible cultural facilities. A nonprofit gallery, museum, arts center or artist-run cultural institution may qualify if it can show a real facility need, community benefit and a sound project. Local residents' involvement, tourism relevance, public access and financial need inform the statutory review criteria. Private commercial design studios and overseas institutions without an eligible Massachusetts cultural facility do not qualify merely by proposing a feasibility assessment.
Which planning and technical services fit the grant
Examples include architectural or engineering drawings, analysis of a proposed cultural property, market and operating research tied to a facility, capital-campaign feasibility, accessibility studies, energy efficiency and sustainable-building assessments, and comprehensive maintenance or space planning. A digital-art gallery might examine the structural, access and energy consequences of installing new projection and audience infrastructure. Routine staff salaries, regular operating activity, generic marketing or organisational strategic planning unrelated to a physical cultural facility are not the purpose of the grant. The planned consultant's expertise, scope of services, clear deliverables and total budget must be documented.
December 10 and the one-to-one cash match
The FY27 application opened October 8, 2026 and must be submitted by December 10, 2026 at 11:59pm Eastern Time. The programme requires a dollar-for-dollar cash match for the approved grant. In-kind donations or unrelated loan proceeds do not count. Applicants need not have every matching dollar in hand when initially applying, but a full secured match is required before entering the grant agreement and drawing funds. The current published grant ceiling is $35,000, not a guaranteed payment. The online application asks for a planning budget, timeline, consultant scope, financial documents, and property or site records where relevant.
Who manages the fund and what to check
The Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund was created through public legislation in 2006 and is administered by Mass Cultural Council together with MassDevelopment. The two organisations publish prior awards, applicant guidance, eligibility and grant categories on official Massachusetts funding pages. Feasibility & Technical Assistance is distinct from the Capital and Systems Replacement Plan tracks, and multiple applications to the same annual fund have special restrictions. Before sharing financial statements, contracts or property documents, verify the FY27 terms, match rules and the specific application category on the official portal.
