RIXC Open Access Residencies: Rolling International Call for Art, Science and Digital-Media Research in Latvia

RIXC Centre for New Media Culture in Riga, Latvia, welcomes artists and artist-researchers working at the intersection of art, science and digital technologies to inquire about its Open Access Residency programme. The organiser accepts applications throughout the year, with no fixed submission deadline. Emerging and established artists may propose digital and media-art research, collaborations, public presentations or work with local communities.

RIXC distinguishes three residency routes: Nordic-Baltic residencies, EU-programme-supported residencies such as EMAP, and Open Access Residencies. This notice is specifically about the third route: approximately one or two Open Access residencies per year, normally lasting two to four weeks. It is NOT the time-limited EMAP 2027 funded call, and the terms and eligibility of that separate programme must not be mixed into this invitation.

Applicants are encouraged to develop a concrete research or artistic plan and explain how they would engage with the Latvian cultural scene, workshops, exhibitions or research partners. RIXC describes opportunities to connect with university scientists, digital-arts practitioners and local communities. Facilities in Riga include an art-science laboratory, media archive, production equipment, Mac workstations with video, 360-degree, sound and VR software, and digital fabrication resources including a 3D printer.

RIXC also maintains its Fields rural research location near Talsi, with space for ecological and artistic fieldwork. The programme describes accommodation arrangements including an apartment near the Riga centre, but the actual room availability, charges, access conditions and research support should be confirmed directly with the organiser before making travel arrangements.

Crucially, the Open Access programme does not promise an automatically funded fellowship or cash stipend. RIXC says selected artists can obtain invitation letters to seek individual grants; applicants should secure their own funding or clarify costs with RIXC. The public webpage lists no fixed application form, fee or deadline. Contact RIXC at rixc@rixc.org to confirm current availability, selection procedure, costs and suitable dates.
