Screen Australia Emerging Gamemakers Fund 2027: Up to A$30,000 for Australian Indie Game Prototypes — Opens 14 December
Screen Australia's Emerging Gamemakers Fund supports independent Australian game developers exploring a new project, creative experimentation or a small-scale game release. Its next application round is scheduled to open on 14 December 2026, with a deadline of 25 February 2027. It is designed for early-career independent developers and some established developers seeking to experiment, not for existing AAA publishers.
PLEASE NOTE: NOT YET OPEN — On 22 October 2026, this 2027 round is advance notice. The official programme website says the next round opens 14 December and closes at 5pm AEDT on Thursday 25 February 2027. Do not present the late-February closing date as proof applications are already being accepted.
FUNDING AND PROJECT SCALE — Eligible applicants may request up to A$30,000. The project needs to be an original game, with a budget of no more than A$500,000 at the time of applying. The fund can support prototyping a new concept or finishing and releasing a micro-scale game. Applications are assessed competitively, so a qualifying concept is not guaranteed funding.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE — Screen Australia's programme information and applicant FAQ describe independent Australian gamemakers operating as sole traders or private companies. Teams must meet Australian citizenship or permanent-residency requirements and intend to undertake game development predominantly in Australia. Student teams are not eligible. Groups should confirm that their business status and intellectual-property arrangements meet the current Terms of Trade.
DIFFERENCE FROM GAMES PRODUCTION FUND — The Emerging fund is intended to help prove or complete very small new projects without necessarily beginning with a mature playable prototype. Studios that already have a functioning early-stage prototype and are planning a bigger production milestone should compare Screen Australia's separate Games Production Fund, which has different entity and funding limits.
ACTIVITIES AND BUDGET — A strong submission should identify the gameplay experiment, target audience, game art and sound needs, tools, accessibility considerations, development milestone and the real labour costs of those producing the work. The organiser expects realistic and fair payment to creators, so overly large unpaid development teams may struggle to fit the small grant.
PREPARING APPLICATIONS — Check the current year's guidelines, application checklist and 2026/27 FAQ, then prepare a clear pitch, the team's professional credentials, evidence of rights ownership, a scope-controlled budget, production timetable and planned prototype or release deliverables. Seek clarity from the organiser about any eligibility exceptions rather than assuming a commercial publisher or student collective qualifies.
