Virginia Artist Catalyst Grants 2026: State-Resident Artists Apply by 1 November
The Virginia Commission for the Arts (VCA) opened the first fiscal year 2027 Artist Catalyst Grant application cycle on 1 October 2026. Applications are accepted through 1 November 2026, or only while funds remain available. The programme awards $500 to eligible individual artists living in Virginia, United States, to advance their professional artistic practice. It is open across artistic disciplines; it is not a special grant reserved exclusively for digital or media art.
Applicants must reside in Virginia
Applicants must be at least 18 years old and legal Virginia residents who practice as artists. It is an individual-artist programme rather than funding for organisations or unrestricted international submissions. Full-time students and artists subject to the programme's listed exclusions cannot apply. The commission's formal guidelines distinguish an eligible professional opportunity from routine personal or business expenses.
Qualifying artistic activities
The grant can assist with an eligible professional-development or artistic advancement opportunity, such as a relevant class, a mentorship, a new body of work or a suitable in-person presentation. A media or digital artist must show that the specific proposed activity complies with the same discipline-neutral eligibility rules as other applicants. The $500 amount is a fixed grant rather than an open budget for large technology purchases.
The programme does not pay for exclusively virtual programming, routine ongoing expenses, or travel items such as accommodation and meals. Proposals involving a website, digital presentation or technical equipment need to be checked against the exact approved cost categories. The programme specifically excludes events and activities outside the United States.
Deadline, availability and timing
The first application cycle runs from 1 October to 1 November 2026 but may close earlier once funds have been committed. VCA asks applicants to submit at least two weeks before the relevant funded activity. For this cycle, eligible activities are scheduled from 15 November 2026 through 15 June 2027. A second cycle is listed for March–April 2027, subject to programme resources.
