Walk of Water 2026 «Out of Sight»: Free Global Photo Stories, $9,000 Awards
Free 2026 worldwide call closes on 30 November
The sixth Walk of Water Photostory Contest is organised by Onewater with the involvement of UNESCO's World Water Assessment Programme and the UN Environment Programme. Its 2026 theme, Out of Sight, asks photographers worldwide to document how water intersects with health, ecosystems, sanitation and wellbeing—particularly the rarely seen work around wastewater. Entries are free and close on 30 November 2026 at 23:59 Central European Time. The initiative has a long-running public exhibition history, having presented previous water-related stories at UNESCO-linked events and venues in Europe and beyond.
Five to ten photographs must form a documented story
This is not a contest for a single spectacular landscape frame. Entrants provide five to ten original photographs, ideally at least ten megapixels in JPEG format, with an accompanying narrative of approximately 2,500–8,000 characters and captions explaining each frame. The published requirements recommend files of at least 3,872 pixels on the longer side and complete caption information. Potential projects might follow wastewater-testing laboratories, water-treatment workers, sanitation challenges, contaminated rivers, clean-water community programmes, coastal resilience, or the cultural and mental-health benefits of blue spaces. Consent and respect for any vulnerable subjects matter more than sensational imagery.
Exactly how the US$9,000 prize pool is divided
The competition's published total of US$9,000 is divided between a Global Wastewater Award pool of US$6,900 and a Youth Wastewater Award pool of US$2,100. The global category includes first US$3,000, second US$2,000, third US$1,000 and three US$300 merits. The youth prizes are US$900, US$750, US$250 and a US$200 merit award; candidates must be 25 or under on 1 December 2026. These awards are not US$9,000 for one winner. Winners are expected to be announced in January 2027, and selected stories may enter 2027 travelling exhibitions and publishing partnerships.
Creative Commons licence is a significant long-term decision
Although this opportunity is free to enter, its licensing requirement goes beyond giving the organiser narrow promotional permission. The published conditions use Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0), a licence under which third parties can reuse, adapt and redistribute submitted work with attribution and share-alike obligations. Photographers retain copyright, but they cannot assume the original images can later be made completely exclusive for a magazine or client. An author should read the full legal terms, obtain consent from any clearly recognisable people, and carefully evaluate whether a nonprofit, journalistic or client commission permits publication under CC BY-SA before agreeing.
Organiser background, judging and participation safeguards
Onewater works at the intersection of water science, environmental education and documentary storytelling and has staged recurring Walk of Water projects in partnership with the UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme. The 2026 announcement is also shared by Photoconsortium, an established European photographic heritage network. Entrants are expected to own all required image rights; artificially generated images and manipulations that change a documentary scene's substantive reality are not appropriate to the call. Use the organiser's current online portal and verify the photo licence, exact upload requirements and identity-data handling before submission; previous-year Walk of Water themes and prize amounts are not the current 2026 rules.
Official organiser application, rules and supporting sources
