Paid exhibition opportunities across two municipal arts venues

The City of Albany in Western Australia's Great Southern region is inviting proposals for its 2028 Exhibition Callout. Selected exhibitions will be presented at the Albany Town Hall and the Vancouver Arts Centre, venues managed through the city's Arts & Culture programme. The municipal website calls this a paid opportunity and explicitly welcomes artists based locally, elsewhere in Australia and internationally. This provides a potentially valuable way for visual artists to connect their practice with a regional Western Australian audience.

The offer is to apply for an exhibition place, rather than simply send a finished artwork into a single-prize competition. Artists may propose a coherent body of work and should think through how the presentation will operate within the chosen gallery spaces. The public summary does not limit the invitation to current residents of Albany, but any special media, access and installation restrictions must be checked in the downloadable application materials.

Two different venues and a future 2028 programming window

Albany Town Hall is a public cultural landmark located on York Street in the city centre, while Vancouver Arts Centre is another principal exhibition and arts-learning venue managed by the municipality. Both have independent functions within Albany's cultural life. A proposed exhibition should be appropriate for the available space and visiting public, including how objects, images or multimedia components are arranged and interpreted.

This specific call concerns exhibitions scheduled during 2028. It is not the same as the City of Albany's 2028 Artist in Residence programme, which offers visiting artists opportunities for self-directed creative work and has a different closing date. Nor should it be confused with the closed 2027 exhibition programme, whose old application materials are still visible lower down the opportunities page.

An international call without a fixed published fee in the summary

The City labels the exhibition opportunity paid and explicitly states that local, national and international artists are eligible to apply. That wording establishes broad geographic access to the call, but the summary does not publish a standard artist fee, travel budget, accommodation provision, exhibition production grant or shipping allowance. It would therefore be inaccurate to assign a cash prize value or imply that international airfares and freight costs are automatically reimbursed.

An artist proposing a project from outside Australia should ask how exhibition fees, installation support, insurance, artwork movement, customs, potential visa needs and the return of works will be handled. Such costs may influence whether an ambitious sculptural or multimedia show is feasible. The downloadable application and any subsequent written correspondence from the municipality are the proper sources for exact contractual details.

Assessing a visual arts or media installation proposal

The published call concerns exhibitions in two managed gallery settings. Artists working in photography, painting, sculpture, installation or related media can examine the official documentation for the media and presentation formats each venue permits. A screen-based or digitally mediated artwork may be worth proposing, but neither projection equipment nor technical production support is promised in the short public description. Medium-specific eligibility needs confirmation before investing in a complex plan.

A strong proposal can explain the exhibition's artistic premise, key works, approximate footprint, audience experience and any accessibility or equipment implications. Previous exhibitions may help applicants understand the scale and curatorial character of the venues. These ideas are practical preparation advice and should not be mistaken for a substitute for the mandatory questions and supporting files in the current City of Albany form.

Closing 30 October 2026: download the correct exhibition application

The official municipal Opportunities page lists 'City of Albany 2028 Exhibition Callout' and sets the deadline at 30 October 2026. The artist should follow the link labelled 'Exhibition Callout 2028' directly below that description to locate the application form and detailed requirements. Submission method, file sizes, requested CV or portfolio documents, and any physical exhibition conditions should be checked there rather than inferred from previous years.

The same page separately promotes the Artist in Residence Program 2028, whose deadline is 30 November 2026. Because both items are visible together, applicants should select the correct programme before beginning. Questions may be directed to the City of Albany Arts & Culture team using the contact details on the official site. The published open call provides no guarantee of selection: venue availability and curatorial assessment remain decisive.

Artist fees and media eligibility are detailed in the official downloadable form, not quantified on the public summary page.
