Aurora PhotoCenter Fixed Focus 2027: Indiana Photographers Aged 18–26, $1,000 Studio Credit
Aurora PhotoCenter is offering up to ten places in its 2027 Fixed Focus Fellowship, a yearlong program for emerging photographers who live in Indiana and are aged 18–26. Applications close on November 15, 2026. Fellows start with an opening reception on January 29, 2027 and take part in activities through December 31. The purpose is to help participants turn ongoing creative ideas into finished photographs, prints, portfolio projects and exhibitions. It is not a worldwide open residency or a salary-paying job.
The $1,000 benefit is a facility credit, not a cash stipend
The advertised US$1,000 consists of credit at Aurora for darkroom rental, scanning, digital printing and some photographic process workshops, charged at member rates. It must be used during the program or forfeited. Each fellow also receives one year of Aurora membership, access to facilities, free basic photo workshops and monthly cohort dinners. Film stock, specialist papers, some chemicals and materials not explicitly covered remain the participant's own expense. Applicants should not budget the $1,000 as cash for rent or flights.
Eligibility and photographic approaches
The fellowship accepts Indiana-resident artists regardless of art-school enrollment or professional background as long as they are within the 18–26 age range and their work incorporates photography. Applicants may explore studio, family and community documentation, analogue and digital photography, printing, historical processes, or interdisciplinary installations with a substantial photographic component. Being a former photography student is not required, and residents outside Indiana are not automatically eligible simply because they can attend occasional events in Indianapolis.
Portfolio and email application
The organizer requires an email application to info@auroraphoto.org with the subject line 'Fixed Focus Fellowship 2027'. Include up to ten work samples (image longest side 2,000 pixels at 72dpi or relevant PDFs), an interest statement of at most 250 words, a short biography of at most 200 words describing your age and photographic practice, and names plus emails for two references. Aurora does not promise individualized feedback on rejected submissions. All materials must arrive by November 15, not merely be drafted that day.
Mentorship and end-of-year public exhibition
The program includes monthly last-Friday feedback dinners, meetings with Director Mary Goodwin and specialist professional-development sessions on pricing, exhibitions and grant proposals. Fellows are invited to show new work in a culminating exhibition opening December 3, 2027; images may be offered for sale to help support future work. Aurora PhotoCenter is a longstanding Indiana photography institution with darkroom, printing laboratories, historical-process courses and an archive of exhibitions and residencies.
One discrepancy in the public schedule
The official page lists an acceptance notification date of January 1, 2026, even though it accepts 2027 Fellowship applications until November 15, 2026. That appears inconsistent; applicants should obtain a corrected notification date directly from Aurora rather than relying on the conflicting line. The actual closing date and 2027 program year are clearly stated in the same source.
Application deadline November 15, 2026. Indiana residents aged 18–26 only. Maximum ten fellows; $1,000 facility credit, not cash.
Official organizer and application
