Camden Council in New South Wales, Australia, has opened an Expression of Interest for a commissioned public artwork at the planned John Street Pocket Garden in Camden Town Centre. The brief centres on 'Connecting with Country' and invites artists to respond to local ecology, waterways, cultural histories, language and community gathering through site-specific visual art. Applicants must be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander artists living in Australia; it is not an unrestricted worldwide open call.

Closing date and who can apply

Stage-one Expressions of Interest opened Monday 19 October 2026 and close Monday 16 November 2026. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists who LIVE IN AUSTRALIA may apply individually or as artist teams, whether emerging or established. Camden residency is not mandatory: the Council explicitly states that eligible artists may live anywhere in Australia. Applicants may refer to a cultural or professional connection to the place, but must not misrepresent Traditional Owner authority or permissions.

The artwork, design media and community engagement

The proposed public art may incorporate sculpture, integrated seating, mosaics, paving, storytelling or other visual-design forms as part of a small public garden. Digital concept drawings and design portfolios can support the development process, but the final commission concerns a built or integrated artwork rather than a purely virtual exhibition, digital-media prize or video commission. The selected artist will also collaborate on a workshop with a local school as part of the design process.

Commission budget and paid second stage

Camden Council proposes a total commission budget of up to A$50,000, excluding GST where applicable. This is a complete artwork-project budget that may include artist fees, meetings, community engagement, fabrication, travel and materials, NOT a A$50,000 personal prize. Up to four artists or teams will be shortlisted for paid concept development; each can receive up to A$1,500 excluding GST upon delivery of the requested proposal and valid invoice. Only one project is expected to receive the main commission.

Application documents and selection stages

The first-stage SmartyGrants application asks for contact details, artist or team biography (up to 500 words), relevant past projects, cultural connection to the site, aspirations for the location, proposed method for community engagement and two referees. No complete concept design is required in the initial EOI. Shortlisted applicants are due to be notified on 30 November, with a site visit and briefing scheduled for 7 December 2026. The commission is awarded through a subsequent assessment, not through the initial EOI alone.

The organiser and cultural responsibilities

Camden Council is a NSW local government authority responsible for Camden Town Centre public spaces, public art procurement and community cultural development. It administers the John Street Pocket Garden commission through its own grants portal. The brief expressly requires respect for Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property and appropriate permission for stories, imagery, language and community knowledge from relevant cultural authorities. The Council can help connect the selected artist with Traditional Owners.

Official application and verification

The complete current timetable, applicant eligibility, council contact and SmartyGrants link appear on Camden Council's original webpage. Use that page to begin the formal EOI. Enquiries should go to the Council Cultural Projects team at creative@camden.nsw.gov.au. Applicants should review the commission scope, design ownership, fabrication responsibilities, cultural approvals, insurance and payment stages before entering any agreement.
