Open call overview

The European Media Art Festival (EMAF) in Osnabrück, Germany, is accepting works for its 40th edition, held April 21–25, 2027, with the exhibition continuing through May 23. The call encompasses Film, Installation and Expanded. This notice focuses on installation-based, interactive and spatial media art relevant to digital-art practitioners.

Installation theme and formats

The Installation section considers interactive, site-specific, spatial and sculptural media artworks. For 2027, installation entries must relate to the theme of the archive as a tool for producing knowledge, a site for critical intervention and a place for imagining alternative futures. Performance, live formats, VR experiences or workshops can also be considered under Expanded, depending on their form.

Eligibility and submission materials

The published regulations accept works completed in 2026 or 2027 and do not require premiere status. An artist may submit at most two works. Works previously entered into the festival will not be reconsidered. Installation and Expanded submissions require a comprehensive project description, technical rider, cost calculation and visual materials. Non-English-language works must have English subtitles for selection viewing. The regulations also address non-EU shipments for internationally entered works.

Deadline, entry fees and selected-artist support

The submission window closes when 2,200 total entries have been received, or no later than December 15, 2026, whichever comes first. There is no entry fee. The published regulations specify a €500 fee for installations and expanded projects, with production costs paid by the festival. Artists selected from the open call receive an invitation, accreditation, three hotel nights (potentially longer if installation is needed) and a contribution to travel costs. Selection notifications are expected from mid-March.

How to apply

Select the appropriate section on EMAF’s Filmchief entry portal and upload the requested project information. The organizer’s English-language regulations govern the final selection, technical requirements, rights and delivery procedures.
