Mamidakis Art Prize 2027: €15,000 for International Sound and Outdoor Installation Artists
The G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation in Greece has opened its international Art Prize 2027 for a new permanent outdoor sculptural or site-specific installation in Agios Nikolaos, Crete. Visual artists and artist duos worldwide may submit proposals until 30 December 2026 at 23:59 Greek local time. The award is €15,000 to the selected artist or duo, with production and installation expenses funded separately. This opportunity explicitly includes sound installations and mixed-media work, but it is not a generic online-only digital art contest.
Who can apply and which media fit?
The official call accepts Greek and international visual artists working with sculpture, installation, sound installation, mixed media, land art and environmentally informed practices. Digital and interactive artists should propose a physically realised, durable outdoor work that responds to the specific site; a screen-only portfolio or a temporary projection without a feasible permanent installation concept would not satisfy the stated purpose. Individuals and two-person artistic duos are welcome. Duos share the prize and production allocation.
Award and production terms
€15,000 award to the winning proposal, normally paid in instalments subject to the organiser's delivery and invoicing terms.
The foundation separately covers agreed construction, production, transport and installation costs; the prize amount is not an all-inclusive production ceiling.
Return travel to Crete and a defined onsite research visit including lodging and meals are supported for the selected artist.
The completed work becomes part of the foundation's permanent art collection and is unveiled publicly in June 2027.
Application requirements and limitations
Applicants must select one of three designated outdoor sites and use the dimensions, photographs and contextual information in the organiser's official briefing. The proposal should explain artistic intent, audience experience, connection to place, long-term maintenance, weather resistance, public safety and realistic technical specifications. Selected shortlisted artists may be asked for a detailed production budget later. Entries are submitted in Greek or English through the foundation's online form, not by emailing materials informally.
Applications close on Wednesday 30 December 2026 at 23:59 Greece time. Production is planned for February–May 2027, with a public ceremony in June. An independent listing describes the application as free, but because the foundation's published summary does not state an explicit payment policy, check the live official form before assuming there is no fee.
About the foundation and its programme
The Georgios and Aristea Mamidakis Foundation has supported contemporary culture and public art in Crete for decades and established its annual Art Prize in 2019. Prior award projects have entered its collection and public outdoor displays. This track record, plus the official site plans and funding detail, lets artists check the opportunity against the permanent-installation commitment before applying.
