Michigan Central Art x Newlab 2027: $30,000 Detroit Art & Technology Residency, Apply by 30 October
Michigan Central Art and Newlab Detroit are recruiting artists, designers, researchers and makers for their 2027 Creative Residency, a twelve-week research and fabrication programme at the intersection of artistic practice, technology, health and society. The official 2026 application deadline is Friday 30 October at 11:59 pm, described as EST in the announcement. Selected fellows receive an unrestricted US $30,000 award as well as access to Newlab Detroit's fabrication facilities, project-related research connections and mentoring. The programme is designed for individuals over 25 who can receive taxable income in the United States, not for collectives submitting a single joint application.
Two creative research tracks: Art & Tech or Art & Health
The Art & Technology track is developed with Newlab and supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. It is especially relevant to work involving data visualisation, interactive systems, wearable devices, accessibility, sustainability, advanced fabrication and creative experiments with emerging technologies. In this context, an artist does not need to promise a commercially launched product. What matters is a compelling research inquiry and a meaningful artistic contribution to a technological setting.
The Art & Health track works with Newlab and Henry Ford Health and welcomes artists examining care, wellness, health technology and the social dimensions of medical and public health systems. Such work could involve participatory practice, interfaces, spatial design or critical reflection on how technology mediates human experience. The organiser excludes conventional medical research projects requiring institutional review board procedures and product-line startups; the fellowships are intended for artistic inquiry rather than replacing other business incubators.
Who is eligible, and who should not apply?
Published eligibility requires an individual applicant above the age of 25, able to receive taxable US income using a Social Security number, Individual Taxpayer Identification Number or Employer Identification Number. Michigan Central's formal press announcement particularly encourages artists, designers and creatives based in the United States. Eligibility to receive taxable US income is not the same as a universal entitlement for every international applicant, so anyone living abroad or in a complex immigration or tax situation should seek clarification directly from the official team before proceeding.
Group applications and collaborations submitted as one applicant are not accepted. An individual artist may have relationships with organisations, communities or collaborators but must be the primary fellowship participant and person trained to use the shared facility. This condition does not forbid a fellow from thinking collaboratively; it clarifies who receives the programme access and assumes responsibility for delivering the residency.
The funding: a $30,000 award and creative infrastructure
Each fellow receives a $30,000 unrestricted award to support the proposed work. Unlike a grant tied to a small preapproved list of art materials, the announcement describes the sum as unrestricted. It is nevertheless connected to selection into the residency and does not mean that every eligible application earns $30,000. The programme also includes access to Newlab Detroit's approximately 18,000-square-foot fabrication lab, project-relevant research opportunities, mentorship and a multidisciplinary community of artists, technology companies and health-sector professionals.
Accommodation, relocation, and individual transportation are not included as universally provided benefits in the information checked. Applicants planning a move to Detroit should calculate what twelve weeks of housing and commuting would mean to them and request a clear answer before committing. An equipment lab may enable prototyping, but it should not be assumed to provide every specialised component, licence or engineering service without discussion.
Two sessions in Detroit during 2027
The programme offers two possible twelve-week sessions. Session One runs from 8 February through 30 April 2027; Session Two runs from 17 May through 6 August 2027. A limited group of four to five fellows is expected across the 2027 programme. Applicants should identify possible conflicts with work, family responsibilities, existing commissions and exhibition schedules, and check the required physical presence in Detroit in the application.
The organiser aims to announce the fellows in January 2027. Some applicants may need more planning time to relocate, obtain a short-term accommodation or arrange a leave from another job. The application itself is free; transport and daily living costs should not be confused with an entry fee, and it is important to avoid guessing that they are reimbursed.
What the selection panel wants to understand
The published evaluation criteria highlight the clarity and originality of the idea, alignment with one of the two tracks, feasibility within twelve weeks, and potential for impact or innovation. A clear proposal should state the artistic question, why Detroit's research or fabrication environment matters, what will be investigated rather than merely manufactured, and what evidence of progress can be produced within the limited time frame. Artworks, prototypes, field research, interviews and public discussions can all have a role depending on the project.
For digital and media artists, this could mean investigating how algorithms influence the reading of a public space, prototyping accessible interactive objects, or examining how physical gestures translate into spatial data and sound. These are examples of potentially relevant artistic directions, not predefined official themes. A project should be rooted in the applicant's actual portfolio and capabilities rather than adopting fashionable technology labels without a convincing artistic reason.
Portfolio limits: no more than five work samples
The organiser asks for a concise application with up to five previous work samples. A longer portfolio disguised as a slide deck containing dozens of images is discouraged and may not be considered. Choose work that demonstrates both artistic seriousness and the ability to experiment, solve problems and complete self-directed projects. Labels should identify medium, year, collaborators and the applicant's own contribution when the work was produced as part of a team.
The application form has intentionally been shortened. The residency team suggests spending no more than about five hours total, including drafting answers, receiving feedback, selecting samples and submitting. Applicants may write their answers in a separate document first to avoid losing work to a browser session; this is practical advice from the programme, not a requirement to use a particular commercial editing tool.
Deadline and a time-zone detail to double-check
Applications are due 30 October 2026 at 11:59 pm according to the Michigan Central announcement, which uses the abbreviation EST. Detroit observes daylight saving time in late October, so the abbreviation in the original notice is potentially imprecise. Rather than relying on a calculated time difference, applicants should follow the countdown and time-zone indication inside the official Submittable form and submit early. The virtual Open House listed for 8 October has already passed; it is not a condition for applying.
Creative integrity, rights and collaboration
Artists working with health-related interviews, patient experience, civic datasets, generative systems or community archives should think about privacy and consent as part of their project design. Rights to existing materials and partnerships with research institutions may affect how a work can be exhibited or documented. The general application announcement does not establish that selected artists must assign all intellectual property to Michigan Central, and candidates should read the actual fellowship agreement when offered rather than assuming total rights retention or total transfer.
This distinction is especially important for an AI or interactive art project. A proposal that uses proprietary datasets, identifiable patient records or third-party software cannot treat access to the lab as permission to use those inputs in every way. A convincing research residency can include ethical constraints, realistic technical limits and ways to document what is learned without exposing protected information.
Official residency information and application
Details checked on 17 October 2026 against the September 21 announcement of Michigan Central and the current programme information. The complete forms, any updated deadline, eligibility and final fellowship agreement are available from the official Submittable portal. Applicants should seek written clarification if their US-tax eligibility, availability for a Detroit session or use of health-related material requires an individual decision.
