NEFA Public Art for Spatial Justice 2026: $15,000–$30,000 Massachusetts Grants
An open call for public art in Massachusetts
New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) is inviting eligible Massachusetts-based artists and organisations working with artists to seek support from Public Art for Spatial Justice. The programme is aimed at public artworks and cultural projects that engage people in shared space and explore more equitable futures. NEFA welcomes projects in all artistic disciplines, so an interactive installation, audiovisual work or technology-informed public experience may be relevant if it genuinely meets the programme's public-space and spatial-justice tests. This is not a grant reserved exclusively for digital art.
Who is eligible to lead an application?
The lead applicant must be based in Massachusetts, and the proposed public artwork must also be located in Massachusetts. Eligible lead applicants include individual Massachusetts artists who are at least 18 years old, groups or collectives of local artists, and Massachusetts community organisations collaborating with specific artists. Being a US artist in another state, or hoping to exhibit a purely online project without a Massachusetts public site, does not meet the stated geographical requirements. Prior or current grantees may face further restrictions and should consult the full eligibility rules.
Funding amount and period
Grants are valued at $15,000 to $30,000 for a project period of up to two years, beginning March 2027 and concluding by February 2029. These are project grants, not automatic personal prize payments. NEFA states that payment is normally released in three stages: 45% following the agreement, another 45% after an interim check-in and the final 10% on approval of the final report. Individual recipients should also review the official US tax guidance, as NEFA warns that grants are taxable and reportable. Successful applicants will be notified in late February 2027.
Project priorities and selection
A proposal must involve public artmaking in a space the general public can encounter and must demonstrate a meaningful relationship to spatial justice. NEFA's review criteria include the proposal's relevance to place, integrity of community relationships, and the artistic activation of public space. Priority is given to projects led or co-led by artists of colour and those rooted in community, especially rural locations or places affected by displacement. There is no requirement for artists to use a particular visual medium; creative technology should serve the public and community aims rather than appearing solely as a technical showcase.
Application deadline and official process
The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday 1 December 2026. Applicants must submit the proposal through NEFA's official online grant portal and review all eligibility, reporting and budget conditions before applying. Awards are competitive and not guaranteed. The official page should be consulted before beginning a detailed production plan, especially for teams whose lead artist lives outside Massachusetts or whose selected site is not genuinely accessible to the public.
Organiser history and practical confidence checks
NEFA operates regional arts funding and professional support programmes across New England, with separate grants for performing arts, public art and touring. Public Art for Spatial Justice is supported by the Barr Foundation and NEFA's Fund for the Arts. The organisation publicly documents programme criteria, its staff contacts, grantee reporting, and project grant procedures. These are useful credibility indicators, but they do not replace an applicant's own review of the official grant terms. Aion Laboratory is publishing an independent summary and does not collect applications for this NEFA programme.
