Guest Artists Space (G.A.S.) Foundation and Yinka Shonibare Foundation, supported by Deutsche Bank, have announced three Project Nexus residencies for 2027. Applications close on 3 November 2026 at 11:59pm West Africa Time (WAT), and final selections are expected on 7 December. The programme is not open to all artists regardless of background: two places are for artists living and working in Nigeria, while the third specifically supports the Nigerian diaspora.

Three different opportunities

The first opportunity is Visual Arts and the Environment, an eight-week stay at G.A.S. Farm House in Ogun State from 11 January to 26 February 2027. It focuses on ecology, landscape, material culture and environmental research; the organizer welcomes sculpture, film, photography, textiles and other visual practices. The second is a four-week Photography residency at G.A.S. Lagos from 8 February to 5 March 2027, including documentary, conceptual, analogue, digital and archival image-making. Both programmes are fully supported and require applicants to live and work in Nigeria.

Nigerian diaspora option and its costs

The third residency, 8 March–2 April 2027 at G.A.S. Lagos, is for a visual artist from the global Nigerian diaspora. It is explicitly part-funded: accommodation, a studio and a living stipend are provided, but international airfare, visa costs, travel or health insurance and other personal expenses are not covered. Diaspora applicants should budget for these expenses instead of interpreting the residency as fully funded.

What the organizers want to see

The call is oriented towards research, exploration and relationships with local people, archives and creative communities. Applicants do not have to promise a finished exhibition or a predetermined final object; a strong proposal explains how the Nigerian context and available facilities will affect the artist's practice. The foundation encourages reading its detailed information pack before choosing which residency to apply for.

About the organizations

G.A.S. and Yinka Shonibare Foundation run interdisciplinary residencies and research programmes connecting Nigerian artists, international exchange, material culture and contemporary art. The foundation's official page provides the information pack, separate submission forms and programme calendar. Use those materials to check conditions before making travel arrangements.
