The Puffin Foundation is accepting requests to apply for its 2027 grant cycle, supporting film, video and theatre projects that might otherwise be overlooked by mainstream funding. The crucial first-stage window runs from 14 September to 20 November 2026. A completed proposal follows in December, with a final deadline of 16 December 2026 at 5 p.m. Eastern time. Artists should not confuse these two milestones: simply preparing a video proposal for the December date will be too late if access to the application portal has not first been requested.

The 2027 cycle is not a general music or photography grant

The foundation rotates artistic disciplines between years. For the 2027 cycle, the autumn request period is explicitly aimed at film/video and theatre. Fine arts, music and photography are normally supported in alternating even-numbered grant years, while environmental artistic activism follows its own annual schedule. A filmmaker proposing a short documentary or community-facing video project may be relevant, but a musician seeking support solely to compose a soundtrack should not assume that the film/video programme covers music-only activity.

Eligibility is limited to US-based applicants

The foundation states that awards can be made to US residents who have a Social Security number or to US-based nonprofit organisations, including qualifying fiscal sponsors. It generally prioritises work accessible to audiences in the United States, although certain projects may take place elsewhere when led by eligible US applicants. There is no general route for an artist abroad without the required US status to receive a grant simply by naming an American exhibition venue.

Up to $3,500, with significant exclusions

The maximum published grant amount is $3,500. The foundation emphasises that applicants should demonstrate genuine financial need and a feasible plan with public benefit. It does not support projects with total budgets above $250,000, nor organisations with annual budgets above that threshold. Travel, education and the writing or publishing of books are excluded expenses; film and video script development is also outside the eligible film/video scope. Funding should be requested for a clearly articulated artistic outcome and eligible production activities, not as an unrestricted personal allowance.

How the two-stage process works

The current programme information asks prospective applicants first to complete an initial questionnaire during the 14 September–20 November request period. The foundation's application instructions also describe a paper request form and a unique online portal login supplied after that request is received and approved. Applicants should follow the current questionnaire and mailing directions shown on the official site, keeping sufficient time for postal delivery where necessary. The complete project proposal is then entered through the individual portal account by 16 December 2026.

What kinds of film/video projects are promising?

The foundation is interested in socially engaged artistic work that expands public access to important issues, such as the climate crisis, healthcare, civil rights, equity and communities underserved by arts institutions. Film and video may include traditional screen formats, streaming productions, radio and podcasts, provided that the application fits the currently funded genre. A proposal should explain the work's intended audience, the necessity of its budget, the applicant's ability to deliver and the resulting public impact. Political or religious advocacy and other excluded material should be checked against the full grant rules.

Checklist before starting

Confirm US residency or organisational eligibility, make sure the artistic discipline is funded this year, keep the project budget within the foundation's limits and distinguish the first-stage 20 November request from the later 16 December proposal. Because the process involves portal access rather than direct unrestricted submission, do not wait until the last day to obtain that access. Applicants should read the FAQ and current programme notices immediately before taking any action.

Official application instructions

Information researched 18 October 2026. The foundation may update the portal instructions; its current grant-cycle page and applicant correspondence take precedence.
