The San Luis Obispo International Film Festival (SLO Film Fest) has opened submissions for its 2027 edition, held 22–27 April 2027 in California. Filmmakers worldwide can enter the George Sidney Independent Film Competition, spanning narrative, documentary, animation, genre film and other forms. The regular entry deadline is 31 October 2026, and an extended submission period closes 30 November. Films must have been completed after 1 July 2025. The festival is Academy Award qualifying for Documentary Shorts, but this status should not be confused with an automatic Oscar nomination for any short film.

Worldwide entry versus the California-only showcase

The George Sidney competition welcomes filmmakers worldwide. A different Central Coast Filmmakers Showcase is restricted to films produced, written or directed by residents of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara or Monterey counties. Its lower fee is for that regional section; international filmmakers should not claim local status to pay less. Other festival programmes include Music Video Showcase, Filmmakers of Tomorrow for pre-college filmmakers under 18, and a new Episodic category.

Entry fees depend on format and date

Until the 31 October regular deadline, the published George Sidney fees are US$50 for short films, US$65 for features and US$55 for student entries. During the extended stage through 30 November, the fees rise to US$65 for shorts, US$80 for features and US$65 for students. The website identifies these fees as non-refundable. Music videos must be shorter than seven minutes; the youth showcase also requires works under seven minutes, school identification and exclusion of college-level films. Check the entry platform for the exact category and payment before proceeding.

AI policy and artistic rights

The festival explicitly says it does not currently accept fully AI-generated films. It invites animation and experimental forms, but filmmakers using generative technology should confirm that their production does not violate this rule. Entrants must hold permissions for their images, musical soundtrack, animation assets, footage, talent and any archival materials. FilmFreeway and HIIKE are the two official submission channels listed on the organizer's website.

Awards and selection support

The festival lists US$1,000 cash awards for feature-category winners, US$500 for shorts and student categories, and US$200 for music videos. Selected George Sidney entrants receive one hotel night in the San Luis Obispo area and two festival access passes; they do not receive guaranteed flights or a complete week of lodging. The organizer plans to notify selected films by 1 February 2027. These benefits and prizes should not be equated with a universal cash grant for all submissions.

About the established festival

SLO Film Fest documents its film programmes and historic festival editions, and its present organizers operate the Palm Theatre film center. Its current submission page shows the exact deadline tiers and entry categories. Applicants should read the 2027 terms there rather than older festival listing sites, since the extended fee and the acceptance policy for AI-generated material are material to the decision to submit.
