A funded practice-led research opportunity in London

The University of London's School of Advanced Study (SAS) has opened a 2027 application round for Creative Practitioner in Residence and Inclusion, Participation and Engagement fellowships. Up to four awards are available in total across the two schemes, not four guaranteed artist residencies. Each six-month placement is expected to take place between January and July 2027 in association with university institutes, libraries or research centres.

Who the creative pathway is for

The Creative Practitioner route is intended for people working in visual art, design, digital-media production, documentary filmmaking, writing, curation, performance and related cultural practice. Applicants should propose how imaginative work connects humanities research to public engagement, policy, education or creative communities. A research doctorate is not required for this creative pathway.

Separate early-career researcher pathway

The Inclusion, Participation and Engagement scheme supports researchers without permanent academic posts who are within eight years of receiving a PhD, excluding career breaks. They must have their doctorate by the start of the fellowship. These are separate eligibility requirements; a creative practitioner without a PhD should choose the Creative Practitioner route instead of incorrectly applying for the research fellowship.

Stipend, mentoring and expected output

The confirmed stipend totals £12,000, paid in monthly instalments over six months. SAS offers a mentor aligned to the project, professional development, contact with researchers, and opportunities to develop workshops, creative outputs or resources. Additional support may be available for work contributing to the university's RESHAPED skills platform, subject to its terms. The university does not cover immigration or visa costs for overseas colleagues.

Exact deadline and application process

Applications must be completed online by 17:00 United Kingdom time on Friday 27 November 2026. Interviews are planned during the second week of December, with successful participants beginning in January or February 2027. Before applying, check your ability to participate in a UK-based six-month appointment, the latest eligibility details, project expectations and any visa arrangements on the official SAS opportunity page.
