Sound Scene 2027 Calls for Interactive Sound and Media Art Proposals from All Locations
About the 2027 call
Sound Scene 2027: Sounds of the City is accepting ideas for June 5–6, 2027, indoors and outdoors at the Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC. The theme considers urban sonic environments, migration, privacy and ecology. Eligible concepts include interactive sound installations, multimedia and multisensory artworks, live performances and small group workshops.
Artists and formats welcomed
The organizer explicitly welcomes all artists rather than limiting the call to Washington-area residents. Creators need to be 18 years old at the festival or apply with an adult. Any level of experience or artistic discipline is acceptable. Sound Scene has audio-art roots but does not require audio-only work; interactive digital media are welcome, while digital equipment is not a universal requirement. Accessible and safe installation design is emphasized.
Submission process and deadline
Proposals are submitted through the official SlideRoom link on the organizer's request-for-proposals page. Describe the connection to the theme, the artist's ability to produce the work and the resulting audience experience. Several different projects may be proposed, but each requires a separate form submission. The closing date is November 15, 2026. Work must comply with the museum's rules. Darkened projection spaces are very scarce and wall projection is discouraged.
Fees, support and important conditions
Submitting is free. Selected artists and groups receive an honorarium ranging from US$500 to US$1,500 depending on the work. The festival cannot separately reimburse transport or lodging. The artist or a designated representative must be on site for installation and removal, and performers or workshop leaders are usually expected for both festival days. Costs and practical display needs should be addressed in the submitted proposal.
