Sustainable Darkroom Futures Residency 2027: £3,400 Grants for UK Residents Only
The Sustainable Darkroom is accepting applications from UK residents for five funded research residencies addressing the future of sustainable photographic systems. Each artist receives a £3,400 grant, with online mentoring, technical support and an in-person exhibition in Sunderland in 2027.
Who can apply and what projects qualify
Eligibility is explicitly restricted to UK residents; this is not an international open call. The programme seeks bold research and development proposals for systemic change in photography, including digital and analogue technologies, AI, photo labs, material waste, gallery infrastructure, and social or legal frameworks. Applicants are encouraged to pursue genuinely new ideas rather than repeat established alternative photographic processes.
Funding, selection and programme
Five artists will join a six-month hybrid residency supported by a £3,400 research-and-development grant per participant, paid in two instalments. The programme includes regular online seminars, project-specific mentoring, and access to University of Sunderland facilities. Two places are reserved for residents of Northern England, and two for disabled artists; the categories can overlap. The final exhibition and symposium will be held in Sunderland in October 2027, with relevant travel and accommodation support.
Deadline and application
Submit by 23 October 2026, midnight UK time, through the Google application form linked on the organiser’s official open-call page. Audio and video proposals of up to ten minutes are accepted. Shortlisted applicants are expected to interview in December 2026. The call describes a demanding research residency, so candidates should review all participation and documentation expectations before applying.
What selected artists must deliver
Residents must contribute to online sessions, present their work at the final Sunderland exhibition and symposium, and prepare a research report of at least 2,000 words for an online publication. These requirements, the venue attendance, access arrangements, and grant terms should be checked against the organiser’s full application guidelines. This opportunity is listed in English only because the selection is specifically for people resident in the United Kingdom.
