Tandanya 2026–27 Residency: Adelaide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Visual and Digital Artists
Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute is accepting expressions of interest for its returning 2026–27 Artist in Residence Program in Adelaide, South Australia. The initiative aims to support three Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists working on Kaurna Country through an extended period of studio-based creative development. Entries close on Friday 30 October 2026. The residency runs from late November 2026 through October 2027, combining a dedicated workspace, a materials allocation and opportunities to present work. Digital media, moving image, installation and multidisciplinary practice are among the eligible visual-art forms.
A strictly defined First Nations and Adelaide-based opportunity
The principal eligibility requirement is that applicants identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. They must also be based in Adelaide, South Australia, throughout the residency. This is not a general international artist residency and not a call for any applicant who simply wishes to travel to Australia. The programme is intentionally centred on the creative practice and cultural leadership of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. Applications should honour that context rather than attempting to present a tenuous connection as qualifying.
Applicants must be independent artists with an active artistic practice and be willing to participate in Tandanya's artistic, cultural and community programming. Artists can be at different stages of their careers; the notice does not impose a blanket 'under 30' requirement or restrict the field to university graduates. Nevertheless, demonstrating a real body of practice and an achievable plan for the residency will be important to a strong submission.
Digital media, film and expanded visual-art practice are welcome
The eligibility statement explicitly includes painting, sculpture, photography, installation, moving image, textiles, digital media, multidisciplinary work and community-engaged practices. That range makes the residency relevant to media artists whose work moves between screens, objects, gallery space and audience participation. However, the purpose is to develop a considered body of visual art, not merely to receive funding for generic video production or a commercial software project.
An artist using film or digital imagery could propose work rooted in personal artistic research, visual storytelling, cultural perspectives, or site-sensitive installation. An interactive work might connect moving images, audio and embodied participation. These are illustrative directions, not themes prescribed by the organiser. For any project involving community stories, language, photographs or cultural knowledge, artists should consider permissions, relationships and cultural protocols from the outset.
What support is offered—and what is not promised
Successful artists are promised dedicated private studio space at Tandanya for the full twelve-month programme and AUD $1,500 per artist specifically toward materials for creating new work. A materials fee is not the same as a monthly stipend or an unrestricted living allowance. The public announcement does not establish a standard salary or guaranteed reimbursement of all travel, equipment, accommodation and everyday expenses. Those costs should be considered separately before committing to a long residency.
Other benefits listed include artist talks, open-studio events, workshops and public activities, access to Tandanya's professional network of First Nations artists and arts workers, media and promotional support, and professional photography and documentation. The programme also offers a platform for an exhibition in 2027. Its public page refers both to a solo exhibition and to a major collaborative exhibition alongside other residents; artists should clarify the precise presentation format during selection rather than treating either wording as an individual guarantee.
Dates from expression of interest to final exhibition
The expression-of-interest round opened on Monday 28 September 2026 and closes Friday 30 October. Shortlisting interviews are scheduled for Monday 9 November, with successful applicants notified Wednesday 18 November. The residency formally begins Monday 30 November 2026 and is scheduled to end Friday 29 October 2027. Tandanya plans a major exhibition across August and September 2027, meaning the public presentation will take place before the entire residency period concludes.
Because interviews and confirmation follow quickly after the closing date, applicants should plan how they will accommodate studio access, existing work, care commitments and other collaborations over the twelve-month period. The organiser's web announcement does not specify an exact hour for submissions on 30 October, so it is prudent not to assume a late-night closing time or the possibility of an extension.
Documents required for an application
The official call requests an artist statement of no more than 500 words, explaining the applicant's practice; a residency proposal of no more than 750 words, including how the programme will support the artist's development and what they hope to achieve; and a curriculum vitae of no more than four pages listing contact information for three professional referees. Supporting material may comprise up to ten images and/or up to five minutes of video. The organisers ask that materials be combined into a single PDF where possible and sent electronically using the email contact on the official page.
Applicants should prepare a legible document with carefully identified files, names and project captions, keeping links to moving-image work accessible without requiring complex sign-in procedures. A professional reference should be someone who can speak to the artist's practice and reliability, rather than a person named without permission. Where the proposal includes collaboration, it is useful to explain what role the applicant themselves will undertake in the work.
Developing a proposal that works within a year
The proposed body of work should be ambitious enough to benefit from sustained studio time but realistic about materials, technical access and the AUD $1,500 materials allocation. Media artists may wish to outline the hardware and software they already possess, what production will require, the time needed for testing, and how the result could be presented safely in a public exhibition. The public notice does not guarantee specialist projection hardware or technical staff for every installation, so assumptions about such facilities should be checked directly.
Tandanya's cultural and community programme is part of the expected residency engagement. A thoughtful application can explain how the artist hopes to contribute artist talks, research sharing or a workshop suited to their own work, rather than treating community activity as an unrelated requirement. It is equally important to avoid presuming access to other people's knowledge, archives or stories without appropriate consultation and consent.
Institutional setting and cultural responsibilities
Tandanya describes itself as Australia's oldest Aboriginal-owned and managed multidisciplinary cultural institute. The residency sits within its ongoing return to cultural programming and professional artistic development. The location is 253 Grenfell Street, Adelaide. The programme has a specific emphasis on strengthening Indigenous artistic autonomy, professional networks and lasting practice. Its goals cannot be reduced to a generic cultural diversity initiative for applicants without the stated identity and location requirements.
Before submitting images or a technical proposal, review permissions for any archival materials, recorded voices, photographed individuals and intellectual property contributed by collaborators. The announcement does not publish a complete participation contract or universal copyright assignment terms, so artists should read the formal agreement when available and seek clarification of exhibition reproduction, sales, documentation and archive permissions.
Official source and submission
Details reviewed on 17 October 2026 from Tandanya's current official Artist in Residence Program announcement. The page provides the email address for expressions of interest and names the Head of Programming as an enquiry contact. All stated dates, eligibility rules and document limits should be checked on the original notice before sending a personal portfolio. Late applications may not be accepted.
