The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Library is seeking a Creative in Residence for 2027. The six-month opportunity invites an artist or creative practitioner to develop a project that becomes part of the library's life, spaces and public culture. The university advertises A$15,000 in remuneration, including superannuation, and a separate A$5,000 materials budget. Applications opened on 7 September 2026, with the key-date schedule giving a deadline of 5 p.m. on Monday 26 October 2026, Sydney local time. This is a substantial on-site creative engagement, not merely a prize for submitting an existing digital artwork.

Who can apply? A university affiliation is not required

The official call explicitly states that applicants do not need to be affiliated with UTS. It seeks people able to work thoughtfully with the university community and its distinctive library environment. This means that independent practitioners outside the university may be considered, provided they can meet the residency and contractual requirements. The published public page does not impose a narrow medium or citizenship test; overseas applicants should confirm any Australian work-right or tax requirements with UTS before assuming that international participation is straightforward.

What could a digital or interdisciplinary artist propose?

Projects might explore a library as a place of knowledge, memory, encounters and experimentation. A digital artist could consider an interactive archive, spatial storytelling or a participatory projection; a moving-image artist might design a process that invites students to reflect on the institution's collections. These are illustrative possibilities, not categories formally promised by UTS. Applicants should explain why their medium and methods make sense in the specific library environment, how people can participate and how the work can be maintained or documented when the residency finishes.

Six months of work, including a strong on-site commitment

The indicative programme period is March to September 2027. UTS expects the resident to work at the Library for at least one day per week for sixteen weeks, or an equivalent total commitment, so that staff and students can see the creative process and interact with the artist. Participation in events and other community activities is part of the role. A proposal that can only be developed remotely and has no meaningful on-site component is unlikely to match the advertised purpose.

Budgeting correctly: remuneration versus materials

The A$15,000 is remuneration for the creative practitioner's work and includes superannuation according to the university's wording. The A$5,000 is a separate materials allocation intended to make the proposed work possible. Treating their total as an unrestricted A$20,000 cash prize would be inaccurate: each amount has a distinct purpose and may have separate rules in the full information pack. Before applying, prepare a realistic outline of production costs, public engagement and the time required on campus.

A date inconsistency in the university's own announcement

There is an important discrepancy in the official text: one sentence in the 'How to apply' paragraph says Monday 26 October 2027, whereas the dated programme timeline correctly places the application closing date at Monday 26 October 2026, and notification in late November 2026. Since 26 October 2027 does not even fall on a Monday, the 2027 year appears to be a typographical error. We are using 26 October 2026, but applicants should contact the listed UTS coordinator for confirmation rather than rely on the inconsistent sentence.

Prepare and send the application

UTS asks candidates to consult the official Creative in Residence Information Pack, which provides the format, evaluation criteria and requested material. The announced submission route is email to Mia Turner at Mia.Turner@uts.edu.au. Prospective residents should make the proposal clear about the creative idea, its public presence, feasibility within six months and the role of the materials budget. Send supporting files early enough to avoid attachment-size or access problems, and check that the university can open any external portfolio links.

Official call

Information verified 18 October 2026. The official information pack and any written clarification from UTS supersede this summary. In particular, confirm the stated October 2026 deadline in light of the typographical discrepancy.
