A truly international residency for emerging photography

The Villa Pérochon photographic art centre in Niort, western France, has opened applications for the 2027 Rencontres de la jeune photographie internationale. Applications close on 15 November 2026 at 11:59 p.m. French time. The programme will select six emerging photographers for a residency from 26 March to 12 April 2027, followed by a public presentation at Musée Bernard d’Agesci from 10 April until 31 May.

The eligibility rules explicitly impose no age or country-of-origin limit. That makes the opportunity relevant to photographers working in Asia, Europe, the Americas and other regions. However, only individual applications are accepted, rather than teams or collectives, and candidates should be prepared to travel to Niort and create new work during the stay.

Exactly what is covered, and the difference between the two fees

The organiser pays for round-trip travel from the photographer's home, accommodation, breakfast and dinner during the residency, and the consumables needed for creative work. It makes a black-and-white analogue darkroom and digital production workshop available with technical assistance, including support from the Picto photographic laboratory.

A successful resident receives €400 as a residence grant and another €400 for the right to show the resulting work in the concluding exhibition. These are separate components adding to €800, not a monthly €800 salary or a €400 per-day rate. The programme's public summary does not promise unlimited equipment or unrestricted expenses outside its stated arrangements; candidates should review travel, insurance and food exclusions before accepting.

Application documents: two photo series, CV and a practical intent

Applications must be submitted through the form on the official Villa Pérochon website. The required documents are a biography and CV, a portfolio featuring two representative series of previous work, and a motivation or intent note explaining what the artist might investigate during the residency. An elaborate finished production proposal is not mandatory, but the candidate should show why a short, intensive research period is feasible.

For uploads the host provides strict file naming: RJPI27_NAME_PORTFOLIO.pdf, RJPI27_NAME_CV.pdf and RJPI27_NAME_NOTE.pdf, each in uppercase without accents. Files must be PDFs. The official form sets specific size limits, including 50 MB for the portfolio and 5 MB for each of the other files. The organiser explicitly rejects submissions by ordinary email or postal mail.

Creative environment and mentors

The 2027 programme is accompanied by the artistic duo Simon Brodbeck and Lucie de Barbuat, whose practice crosses photography and video to investigate landscape, memory, perception and time. Their career includes a residency at Villa Médicis and presentations at important European photographic institutions. The selection jury will be led by the duo and include specialists in contemporary photography.

Selected residents can use Niort, located near the Marais poitevin, as a context for new image-making and visual research. The resulting work is to be produced during the stay and installed for the public exhibition. Photographers using software-based processes, constructed images or hybrid analogue/digital techniques can explain how the centre's workshops and their personal research approach would fit the available time.

Who runs it? A documented international photography programme

Villa Pérochon is a dedicated centre for contemporary photography operated by the association Pour l’Instant. The Rencontres de la jeune photographie internationale have been organised over numerous editions, with photographic residencies, public exhibitions and documented invited artists. The centre's website publishes its contact address in Niort, a downloadable programme, the names of the 2027 artistic mentors and a direct application form. These features support a verifiable opportunity, but selection remains competitive.
