Creative Europe MEDIA 2027: €90,000–€510,000 Slate Grants for European Film, Animation and XR
The European Commission has opened the 2027 Creative Europe MEDIA 'European Slate Development' call (CREA-MEDIA-2027-DEVSLATE). It supports established independent audiovisual production companies based in eligible European MEDIA countries as they develop a group of THREE to FIVE new fiction, animation, creative documentary or qualifying interactive immersive projects. The call opened 30 September 2026 and closes 1 December 2026 at 17:00 Brussels time, equivalent to 1:00 a.m. Japan Standard Time on 2 December. The expected grant amount is €90,000 to €510,000 for the entire project SLATE. This figure is neither per screenplay nor an individual artist's guaranteed cash prize.
Who can apply: professional track record is mandatory
Eligible applicants are independent audiovisual production companies registered and established in countries participating in Creative Europe MEDIA, with sufficient financial capacity to develop multiple works at once. The programme normally requires an international distribution track record, including at least two commercially circulated previous productions in at least three foreign territories. A company that only organised domestic festival screenings, or an individual creator without an eligible company, is not automatically qualified. The programme is not available to an ordinary Japanese company solely registered in Japan. All detailed incorporation, ownership and eligible-country rules must be checked in the 2027 EU call document.
A slate of multiple commercially oriented works
At least three and at most five distinct audiovisual projects, with the option to add a short film by an emerging talent.
Narrative fiction, animation, creative documentary and qualifying non-linear interactive immersive works, including narrative virtual reality.
For cinema releases, feature works generally have a minimum sixty-minute duration; broadcast/digital animation and documentaries have different duration rules.
Commercial distribution and cross-border audience plans are crucial; not just a gallery exhibition or personal experimental script.
The application should describe each work's rights, financing, international partners, target audience, creative team and distribution strategy.
Grant structure and financial examples
Indicative total EU contribution: between €90,000 and €510,000 per eligible multi-project slate.
Fixed lump-sum examples in official desk guidance: one-off animated feature €55,000; animation series €60,000.
One-off creative documentary component €30,000; documentary series €35,000.
Fiction work components vary according to form and production budget; optional emerging-director short film component €10,000.
The individual lump sums are combined within an eligible slate; do not add the maximum total grant on top of each individual figure.
The €22.37-million figure in the call description represents the ENTIRE grant call budget, not one applicant's grant.
Previous releases, rights and project timing
The applicant should substantiate previous commercial international releases and hold the relevant rights in new slate materials, with signed agreements for underlying source material. The development scheme generally restricts beginning principal photography until ten months after the 1 December 2026 application deadline, unless the 2027 binding terms explicitly permit an exception. Coordinate the film schedule before applying; a project already shooting or largely completed may not qualify. The European Commission also reviews artistic originality, audience appeal, environmental sustainability, gender balance and inclusion in the production plan.
Application: Funding & Tenders portal
Apply online through the EU Funding & Tenders portal under call ID CREA-MEDIA-2027-DEVSLATE. Register the company, check eligibility and any PIC identification, prepare administrative Part A, technical Part B and any required annexes, including a budget and evidence of previous successful audiovisual works. The public call overview does not state a universal submission fee. Do not rely on assumptions about application charges, and do not pay a commercial agent who promises a guaranteed grant. This is a competitive institutional grant with results expected in May 2027.
Why the public fund matters
Creative Europe MEDIA is the European Commission's funding framework for screen-based creative industries. Its national desks in Ireland, the Czech Republic and elsewhere publish supporting explanations, while the Commission hosts the binding application and evaluation rules. Previous Slate Development schemes have supported European independent producers expanding feature film and animation portfolios, enabling international co-production and new directing talent. Applicants should use the 2027 documentation, not the older 2026 deadline page.
