The Jewish Film Institute (JFI), organiser of the longstanding San Francisco Jewish Film Festival, has opened the 2027 JFI Grants programme for independent filmmakers working on stories exploring Jewish history, culture, identity and everyday life. The scheme is for FINISHING an audiovisual work—colour grading, sound post-production, final editing, accessibility and similar completion expenses—rather than developing a script or financing an unshot idea. The 2027 application window opened 15 October 2026; the early deadline is 6 November and the final Phase 1 deadline is 3 December 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time. The 2027 FilmFreeway listing advertises grants from US$5,000 to US$30,000. These are possible awards to selected eligible projects, not a guaranteed payment for submitting.

What qualifies, and who is permitted to direct?

  • Original fiction, documentary, hybrid and animated films, short or feature length, as well as episodic or web series with substantive themes concerning Jewish histories, lives or identities.

  • A project already in post-production with at least a STRONG ROUGH CUT, not in script development, pre-production, principal photography or very early post.

  • The filmmaker must be at least 18 years of age and have creative, editorial and financial control plus legal rights to the work.

  • A filmmaker need not identify as Jewish. The topic's nuanced relationship to Jewish experience, not the applicant's religion, matters.

  • Full-time students, works-for-hire and educational, industrial or promotional films are excluded.

  • Unfinished work is required when applying. If it premieres during the grant process, documented outstanding finishing expenses may still qualify.

Films and materials to prepare

Create a FilmFreeway project page with the director's biography, artistic and editorial vision, a written director's statement and a screenable link to a MAXIMUM ten minutes of sample footage. The sample must be in English or carry English subtitles. The JFI Phase 1 application also includes special essay questions that cannot be saved partway through the online form. Download and compose all answers offline in advance, then paste them into the form. Declare any uses of generative AI in the actual film or application materials, including both purpose and method, as the 2027 guide specifies.

Entry fees: shorts and feature films

  • Early November 6 submissions: feature-length projects $40, shorts under 40 minutes $30, as stated on the 2027 FilmFreeway entry listing.

  • Regular final deadline December 3: features $50, shorts $40.

  • The amount is a non-refundable entry charge; JFI warns that ineligible applications do not receive refunds.

  • The institute asks financially constrained filmmakers to contact filmmakers@jfi.org about fee hardship or alternative submission methods.

  • The FilmFreeway form controls any final categorisation for documentary, animation and episodic formats; avoid paying before the project is screened against the eligibility rules.

Two-round timeline

  • Phase 1 applications opened October 15, 2026.

  • November 6: early-bird deadline.

  • December 3: final first-round deadline.

  • February 5, 2027: selected projects invited to submit a complete Phase 2 proposal.

  • March 3, 2027: second-round submission deadline.

  • July 17, 2027: final notice deadline; award announcement August 2027.

Rights and obligations for selected filmmakers

JFI grantees must credit the institute and any named signature grant across the finished film's credits and specified marketing. The organiser reserves the first option to host a Bay Area premiere and may ask for an MP4 and trailer for its private archive. Finished work must be closed-captioned. The 2027 guidance emphasises continued artistic control and copyright ownership by the applicant. Financing does not mean JFI becomes the owner of the documentary or animation. Before accepting funds, review the grant agreement for screening commitments, reporting milestones and use of preview footage.

Organiser track record

JFI runs the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival and professional filmmaker support. Its current grants programme has distributed approximately $580,000 to 44 projects since 2020, with past recipients subsequently appearing at international film festivals. Previous cycles and supported films are documented publicly. The programme's substantive rough-cut, editorial-control and subject requirements help filmmakers decide whether the potential finishing funds justify the non-refundable application charge.
