About the organizer and opportunity
California's Kala Art Institute is bringing back four Media Arts Fellowships for 2027–28. The program supports innovative work across film, video, animation, sound, performance cinema and installation. Kala has operated this fellowship since 2017, connecting artist projects with its print, photography, digital and gallery facilities.
Eligibility and artistic focus
The competition is open to local, national and international applicants. Selection considers conceptual originality, artistic excellence and technical understanding of the proposed work. Artists enrolled in degree-granting programs during the fellowship term are ineligible for this fellowship, although the institute offers a separate artist residency program.
Important dates and stages
The official schedule says applications open in December 2026, close on 1 March 2027 and applicants are notified in May 2027. As of 26 October 2026, the portal for this edition has not yet opened. An information session is planned for January, and the organizer directs applicants to Kala's SlideRoom page in December.
Costs, support and practical requirements
The fellowship includes a $3,000 stipend, up to nine months of unlimited facility access, a free class or workshop and a culminating group exhibition. This does not necessarily cover international travel, accommodation or living costs, so verify financial details before committing to a long stay.
How to apply and what to verify
Prepare a CV, application responses, up to ten images or five minutes of video work samples, descriptions of the works and contact information for two references. Use the institute's official Media Arts Residency page and SlideRoom application when it goes live.
Official announcement and application
Information checked 26 October 2026. This independently edited and translated reference is not the organizer's application form. Eligibility, deadlines, fees and terms can change; the original announcement and application portal take precedence.
