Matsu Biennial 2027 Opens Worldwide Call for Site-Specific and Participatory Art
International opportunity
The 4th Matsu Biennial on Taiwan's Matsu Islands is inviting artists and creative teams worldwide to propose site-specific installations and participatory art. Scheduled for August 20–November 7, 2027, it explores island culture, the legacy of geopolitical outposts and the marine environment. Interactive, immersive and community-based proposals are within its broad range.
Eligibility
The organizer explicitly announces 'Calling All Artists Worldwide'. Artists, creative practitioners and teams of any nationality are eligible, subject to the published minimum age of 18. Individuals or teams may submit a maximum of two proposals, each with its own application form. Receipt of a form is not a statement of eligibility or a selection decision.
Artistic and technical requirements
Creative approaches relate to three flexible directions: Islands, encompassing Eastern Min culture, religious traditions and homecoming; Outposts, concerning military locations, geopolitics and collective memory; and Ocean, addressing conservation, ecological sustainability and marine debris. Eligible works include on-site indoor or outdoor installations and participatory or immersive experiences. Digital technology is welcome where appropriate but is not a universal requirement.
Deadlines and submission
Submit through the official online form linked from the Matsu Biennial announcement by October 30, 2026 at 17:00 GMT+8, Taiwan time. Describe the concept, its connection to Matsu, preferred site, production and maintenance plan, budget and public engagement. The organizer provides Chinese, English, Japanese and Korean guidelines and expects selection results at the end of November 2026.
Fees, funding and key conditions
Funding for each selected proposal is in principle around NT$800,000 inclusive of tax, with the final approved amount depending on the project and jury review. It is an implementation budget, not a guaranteed cash prize or necessarily separate travel money. Production, transport, accommodation, insurance and other logistics must be planned and costed. Projects should be finished by August 10, 2027, and site arrangements are agreed with organizers after selection.
