SFFSFF 2027: Sci-Fi and Fantasy Animation Shorts at MOPOP, $25 Regular Entry Until October 31
Seattle's Museum of Pop Culture (MOPOP), together with the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF), has opened entries for the 2027 Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival, commonly known as SFFSFF. The call welcomes short sci-fi and fantasy films from around the world, including independent animation and live-action work. The standard-fee period runs through October 31, 2026, followed by a later entry period through December 31.
Which films fit this program?
Short works should have a recognizable speculative, science-fiction or fantasy dimension, with distinctive storytelling, visual imagination and audience impact. Animated films are eligible alongside live-action shorts. Digital artists producing stylized VFX, experimental genre narratives or animation can consider the festival when the work functions as a short film rather than a standalone static installation. Check the FilmFreeway rules for film length and production-format limits before paying.
Fees and free young-filmmaker option
The organizer advertises $25 per entry for the August 1–October 31 regular period. From November 1 through December 31, the late-entry fee is $35. There was also a $20 early-bird period that has already passed. Importantly, filmmakers aged 24 or younger can enter the separate Next Generation Filmmakers section free of charge. The museum also provides an application route for filmmakers who cannot afford the fee.
What selection does and does not provide
SFFSFF screens selections for live audiences and critics, offering public visibility and the possibility of professional connections. Its organizers note that films selected in past editions have gone on to distribution, museum exhibitions and award recognition. That is not a guarantee of distribution, a cash prize or a paid screening opportunity for every applicant. Production and screening rights should be verified in the FilmFreeway terms.
Organizer background and safe entry
MOPOP is a museum devoted to popular culture, while SIFF is a recognized Seattle-based film organization. The science-fiction and fantasy festival has been presented for more than two decades, providing a traceable program history. Apply through the FilmFreeway link directly on MOPOP's site; for questions, MOPOP publishes sffsff@mopop.org.
Regular-fee deadline: October 31, 2026. Late/final entry period: November 1–December 31, 2026. Verify your eligibility for the free Next Generation category.
