Narva Art Residency 2027: Nordic–Baltic Artists Can Apply for €2,000 Sensing the Border Grant
An art-science and sensory residency on the EU's eastern border
Narva Art Residency (NART) in Estonia is seeking five artists for Sensing the Border 2027, a ten-week practice-based residency exploring how residents experience the Estonia–Russia border. Each selected artist works primarily with one sense—sight, hearing, touch, smell or taste—and develops community engagement and a new creative outcome in Narva. Sound artists, digital practitioners and visual artists are eligible alongside other disciplines, but a proposed work must address the specific border and sensory theme.
Critical eligibility: Nordic or Baltic residence
The call is for individual professional artists permanently resident in Denmark, Finland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Åland, Latvia or Lithuania. Artists resident in Estonia are specifically excluded from this grant. A person living elsewhere, including Japan, is not automatically eligible because of their nationality or family heritage. Applicants must be available for a full uninterrupted ten-week stay and complete the application in English.
Closing date and the five 2027 periods
Applications close on 25 October 2026 at 23:59 Estonian local time. The five dates offered are 4 January–14 March, 26 April–4 July, 5 July–12 September, 13 September–21 November and 11 October–20 December 2027. Specify every period for which you are available when submitting. The residency organiser accepts applications only through the web form on the official announcement page; it explicitly does not accept emailed entries.
What is covered, and what is not
Each selected participant receives a €2,000 creative grant, a €1,000 production budget and up to €300 in travel reimbursement, plus free accommodation, shared workspace and mentorship. The grants have distinct purposes and should not be treated as one unconditional €3,300 cash payment. Additional support includes production advice, translation and help connecting with local communities. Applicants should check their personal visa, insurance and daily-cost needs separately.
About NART and how to verify
Narva Art Residency is operated by the Estonian Academy of Arts in cooperation with Narva Gate, with support from the Estonian Ministry of Culture. This programme is financed by Nordic Culture Point. NART maintains a publicly visible residency programme and named institutional partners, making it possible to verify that the call is genuine. The 2027 opportunity is specifically aimed at Nordic–Baltic residents rather than at all overseas artists.
