Saltonstall 2027 New York Artist Residencies: Free Stays for State Residents, Apply by December 6
The Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts is accepting applications for its 2027 juried artist and writer residencies, with a deadline of Sunday, December 6, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Visual artists, filmmakers and photographers may seek uninterrupted studio time in a rural setting near Ithaca, New York. This is a valuable opportunity for digital photography, experimental film and visual production, but its most important eligibility rule is geographic: applicants must be year-round residents of New York State or Indian Nations within the state.
Not a worldwide artist residency
The program welcomes people of varied artistic backgrounds and career stages, but it does not accept artists merely visiting New York or living in other U.S. states or countries. The organizer also offers writing categories, but these are limited to poetry and fiction for 2027; screenwriting, playwriting and creative nonfiction are not part of this call. Artists studying, working or exhibiting in New York must confirm that their year-round residence meets the requirement.
Free attendance and genuine stipend terms
Applications cost $0 and participation is free. The foundation provides private accommodation and shared creative facilities. Most fellows receive a stipend of $100 for each week in residency, with up to $1,000 additional aid according to financial need. The separate seven-night parent/caregiver residencies include a $500 stipend for selected parent fellows. These are modest residency-support amounts, not full-time employment salaries or unrestricted production grants.
Anonymous work sample requirements
Each applicant submits a one-page statement about their practice without disclosing educational credentials, exhibitions or other identifying information. Visual artists and photographers submit ten images, while filmmakers provide one or two clips totaling at most five minutes. File names, accompanying lists and the work samples must not reveal the applicant's name. The foundation warns that an application violating anonymity can be disqualified without an opportunity to correct it.
Organizer, selection and facilities
Saltonstall's juried residencies are selected by rotating independent juries rather than its staff, and the foundation publishes previous cohorts and the 2027 application terms. Groups of five include one photographer or filmmaker and two visual artists alongside writers, with stays of two to four weeks plus special one-week caregiver options. The website also describes its darkroom, accommodations and accessible spaces. Applications are submitted through the foundation's verified Submittable link.
Deadline: December 6, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Eligibility: full-time New York State residents. Application and residence free.
