Irish animation production funding, not early concept development

Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland's Animation: Television programme provides production support for animated television singles and series led by independent Irish producers. Its official programme page lists a maximum support of €400,000. This funding is intended for production-ready projects with significant creative and financial preparation; it is different from the agency's Animation Development Loan programme, which helps with early concept, design and story work and has a €30,000 maximum.

Important conflicting October deadline notices

As checked on 20 October 2026, Screen Ireland's dedicated Animation: Television scheme page lists Monday 26 October 2026 at 1pm among application deadlines. However, Screen Ireland's overall funding landing page currently lists 23 October 2026 at 1pm for Production Funding. These two official notices conflict, so the conservative recommendation is to submit before Friday 23 October at 1pm Irish local time unless Screen Ireland expressly confirms the later animation-specific 26 October deadline in writing. Applicants should not rely on an article to extend any binding application period.

Company, creative-team and broadcaster prerequisites

Applications are open to independent production companies registered in the Republic of Ireland which maintain an office and staff there. The company must have clear access to the underlying screen rights and signed or otherwise appropriate agreements with its screenwriter, director and principal animator. Documentary evidence of broadcaster support is required at application stage. Freelance animators or international studios without a qualifying Irish lead producer and broadcaster relationship cannot simply submit their personal showreel for this funding.

Projects eligible for the programme

The scheme supports a single animated television programme or an animated television series that has been originated and creatively led by Irish talent—writers, directors, producers, animators—and whose management is primarily in Irish hands. Content is generally made predominantly in Irish or English, or both. A standalone gallery installation, casual YouTube animation experiment or commercial game prototype is not inherently an eligible television production. Rights, production budget, delivery and broadcaster conditions must be backed by evidence.

What the €400,000 maximum does and does not mean

Up to €400,000 is the published maximum loan/support for eligible applicants; it is not a set-price contract offered to anyone proposing an animated series. The agency warns that its production rounds are highly oversubscribed and that many eligible proposals cannot be financed. Applicants should have a practical finance plan, broadcaster correspondence, realistic animation schedule, crew and supplier costs, clear ownership and professional management, rather than present a speculative concept as fully financed.

Funding process and official guidelines

Screen Ireland says existing supported projects must consult their project manager before seeking further funding, whereas new projects should apply directly through the official funding portal. Applications must comply with the frequently updated Production Funding Guidelines; ineligible proposals are automatically rejected. The portal closes at 1pm on the controlling deadline and further applications are not generally accepted afterward. Given the date discrepancy, contact Screen Ireland's production team or portal support immediately to confirm the correct October 2026 cutoff.

About the organiser

Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland is Ireland's national development and production funding agency for screen content. It has supported established and emerging independent producers and cooperates with broadcasters and festival platforms. Public funding decisions and examples of animation from the Frameworks short-film scheme provide an independently verifiable institutional history. Use the official programme webpage and its own application system, not an intermediary promising a guaranteed award. Screen Ireland alone determines funding eligibility and deadlines.
