Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2027: Free Global Immersive Film Entries by 15 December
A new immersive competition within a global filmmaker award
Sony Future Filmmaker Awards has opened its 2027 edition to independent filmmakers worldwide, with no entry fee. The awards run six categories: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Animation, Immersive, Student and Future Format. The new Immersive category, presented by Meta, focuses on cinematic storytelling in spatial video formats rather than general-purpose virtual worlds or real-time games.
Exactly what the Immersive category accepts
The organizer specifies completed pre-rendered video in VR180 or 360-degree mono or stereoscopic form, 5 to 20 minutes long. Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR) and other non-video XR techniques are not eligible for this particular category. The upload rules require a file up to 25 GB, a downloadable link and an online screener. Resolution and codec requirements vary; read the full specifications before exporting a master.
Deadline, eligibility and submission package
Entries are free and close on 15 December 2026 at 07:00 US Central Standard Time according to the official rules. Eligible works must have been released between 1 January 2025 and 15 December 2026. Entrants must have the rights to their work, provide English-language material or English subtitles, and follow the category's specific format and duration. Winners are not determined by the number of views.
What selected creators receive
The organization states that up to three Immersive projects can be shortlisted. Shortlisted filmmakers are invited to an industry-focused programme in Los Angeles, with flights and accommodation provided. The Immersive winner receives a Meta VR device and award recognition; other category winners have different prizes, so applicants should not assume every category offers identical camera or cash awards.
