UCC Film Artist in Residence 2027: €30,000 for Ireland-Based Film Directors, 22 October Deadline
One film-artist residency in Cork during 2027
University College Cork (UCC) and Ireland's Arts Council are inviting professional film artists to become Film Artist in Residence for the 2027 calendar year. Applications close at 5:30 pm Ireland time on Thursday, 22 October 2026. The selected artist receives a fee of €30,000 and working space at UCC, with opportunities both to develop their practice and to engage students at the university's School of Film, Music and Theatre. This is not a general film-student internship.
Irish residency and professional filmmaking credentials
Applicants must be professional practising artists resident in the Republic of Ireland, subject to the exceptions explained in the institution's official regulations. Applicants must demonstrate filmmaking credits, including director or writer-director responsibility for at least one feature-length film or creative documentary that was screened in a cinema. Simply having created a short social-media video or music-video reel does not replace the stated feature/documentary credit. Review the Arts Council's residency criteria before applying.
Two phases: university engagement and independent creation
From January through June 2027, the artist works with film and screen-media students and faculty, designing workshops, mentoring, postgraduate sessions, public events or other creative engagement. Contact with university students and staff is capped at four hours per week; the residency is not intended to cover regular core teaching duties. From July to December the artist can focus wholly on their own creative practice with the university's support.
What the €30,000 actually includes
The artist fee totals €30,000, comprising €20,000 supported by the Arts Council and €10,000 from UCC. It is paid by the Arts Council in two instalments; a final activity report is required. UCC provides dedicated creative workspace and administrative support but expressly does not provide accommodation. Relocation, housing, commuting and living costs therefore need to be considered by any applicant based elsewhere in Ireland.
Email-only application by 22 October
Candidates submit their detailed proposal for the residency and engagement with students, a one-page artist statement explaining the impact on their film practice, and a comprehensive CV listing relevant screen credits. Applications are accepted only by email to filmartist@ucc.ie and must arrive by 5:30 pm Irish time on 22 October 2026. The university announcement describes the 2027 role but contains one inconsistent sentence saying 'calendar year 2026'; the work phases and page title explicitly reference 2027. Confirm any doubt directly with the university.
The institutions and earlier artist engagement
University College Cork has an established School of Film, Music and Theatre encompassing research, degree programmes and interactions with professional screen artists. The Arts Council of Ireland is the country's statutory agency for developing the arts and supports residency schemes across artistic disciplines. Their partnership links independent film-making practice with educational exchange and the cultural life of Cork. Apply only using the university's published contact details, not a commercial residency-fee intermediary.
