Wherewithal Grants 2027: two artist funding tracks

Wherewithal Grants, administered by Washington Project for the Arts (WPA) with support from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, is accepting 2027 applications. The $5,000 Research Grant supports investigation and experimental artistic development, while the $7,500 Project & Presentation Grant supports nontraditional artist-organized projects intended for public presentation during 2027. This is an experimental, multidisciplinary visual arts fund, not an exclusive digital-art competition.

Local residency and artistic eligibility

Applicants must live in Washington, DC or one of the surrounding eligible areas: Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Montgomery or Prince George’s counties. They must have a record of presenting work in visual arts contexts. Relevant media art, interactive work, video, installation and digital experimentation can be considered within the program’s broader visual-arts criteria. Full-time university students, nonprofit organizations and for-profit companies are excluded. Applicants must choose just one of the two grant tracks for the same cycle.

Application dates and requirements

Applications for the 2027 cycle opened in early October 2026 and close Thursday, November 19, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time. Research grantees will prepare an in-process public presentation in fall 2027; the Project & Presentation track requires a publicly accessible activity within the region or a qualifying virtual presentation. The official application page contains the current submission portal instructions and the program site sets out grant reports and artist-payment expectations.

Application information checked

The November 2026 deadline, DC-area residence list, current awards, track limitations and WPA sponsorship were checked against the official Wherewithal and WPA websites. Wherewithal’s own 'Apply now' area identifies the 2027 portal; it should be used rather than unsolicited third-party application links. Confirm supporting materials, identity/tax forms and expenses through the official application instructions before transmitting them.
